You know, when my kids were little and I was first exposed to rap, I had the standard Midwest white guy reaction. I hated it. But as my kids became teenagers, they exposed me to the best of it - Jay Z, De La Soul, NWA - and I came to understand its roots and really dig it. They turned me on to good electronica, too, and some weird stuff like Fleet Foxes and Broken Social Scene. I pretty much dig anything done with skill and conviction. I’ve had clients ask me for hip-hop, and I was a great mimic, but my rap tracks sucked compared to what I was emulating. It takes more chops than you’d think.
