Tired of Fooling Around...

Never know until you play it. I turned down a 1968 SG Standard last year I couldn't hang with the 1 5/8" nut.
If you factor in inflation the Gibson Custom Shop guitars cost the same as the originals did. Price of gold $35.00 per oz. pre 1971 and now ???

True. just cos its old doesn't mean its good (i've run across some truly terrible '50's Gibsons and Fenders, busting that myth), but I would personally hang onto it for an investment even if it was a dog, just because of the condition.

My belief is that when human hands are involved, you seem to have really great - or really terrible - workmanship, based on the skillset of the worker in question.

Hopefully, this SG is a really fine example!!!!

Oh yeah, fingers crossed for Chris it ends up being a grail that also plays and sounds the part. Looks-wise the thing has mojo to spare, and I wouldn't let it go no matter what in that kind of condition - they aren't making any more of them if you know what I mean. I was just referencing the oft propagated myth that the guitars built by semi-skilled factory workers in the '50's and '60's were somehow magically superior to guitars built by semi-skilled factory workers last week. Its not like these things were being painstakingly crafted one-by-one by highly trained luthiers, whether in Kalamazoo or Fullerton. They had assembly lines, and quotas just like any other working stiff.

The guitar was one owner until very recently. Original owner bought it, tried to learn, lost interest and stuffed it in the closet where it sat for about 49 years!

I picked it up from the second owner who is trying to fund an even older and much more expensive guitar!

He shipped it overnight in a travel case and it will be here my 10:30 am tomorrow.

He also sent me 85 Hi-Res photos!

As many have said, the condition alone calls for this one to be held on to just for the future price increases...

Congrats Chris----Im gonna go out on a limb and say IF YOU DONT LIKE THAT ONE, maybe you need to consider drums ;)

Adrian, don't say drums to Chris. I mentioned some drummers in his favorite bands once and he said he doesn't even notice drums or drummers. I was shocked, because I would have sworn he'd have some recollection or opinion on the one from one of his favorite groups. None other than nick Mason of Pink Floyd.

Pretty sure Chris is completely fixated on guitars.

Truth! And I have no idea why. Maybe because I have no rhythm for drums???

gball, i first sat at a kit in front of church one day while taking a break from hanging 12 foot sheetrock.

it was so fun i went to Mars Music where my friend the church drummer worked and I bought my first kit soon after.

PS, I almost forgot as an added bonus to my anticipation and enjoyment for my special order wait time. My friend also told me Mike Portnoy and Rod Morgenstein were going to do a clinic there and the next night a free Dixie Dregs show and Dream Theater show at a little club outside of Fells Point called Bohagers. WHAT a freaking treat to see both drummers and these bands up close and personal and free.

Oh c'mon Chris. If you play it, it can someday look like this.

Bro John, a few years ago, I was in the Towson Md GC to try to put a personal eyeball, hands on check on a mid to late 60's SG a fella was looking to buy over the internet through that store. When I got there, they told me they put it in the back, but another maybe 67 Special was on the wall. It looked as played as yours, but the fret wire was mostly worn down and a few other things that would have kept me from ever putting the 2k+ the GC was asking for it.

If the price was like $700 I mighta bought it and had a refret done, if all the electronics were OEM and working right. OR if it was $70 all the better. I am cheap. I almost need smelling salts if a guitar or bass costs me more than $1000. Hard to believe I actually have 3 that did.

That's rad! You talking about the Mars that was on Rolling Road, just off of Route 40? That was my favorite music store of all time. Bill's had that kitschy vibe, but I generally just wanted to get in and out of there as quickly as possible (although that is where I did buy many a guitar over the years).
