The Warlock Project

Wow really fine lines in that crackle! So can you tell the difference what you did between getting the larger crackle vs. the small stuff?

Yes, there are 2 factors.

1) The base coat thickness. The heavier the base coat, the thicker the lines.
2) Crackle thickness. The heavier the crackle coat, the bigger the "chunks" that form the lines.

When applying the crackle, when you think you applied it heavy enough ... go HEAVIER! I started playing around with it a little, and there is a fine line between getting it to that big crackle and getting runs in the paint.

This feels like an art form and getting that feel for how much paint to apply to get the effect you want.

Also, the dry time of the base coat might be a factor, but I dont know how much or what the effect would be, if at all.

After over an hour of sanding. The level sanding is done.
As thrilling as it may sound. I didn’t do a video of the sanding. I know what you are thinking, “WTH! he left out the exciting part!”
Instead here are a few pictures of the aftermath.

Here I put the pickup rings and pups on top just to kind of get the effect. They standout more because they are glossy.

The next step is a second coat of clear and even more sanding.
My goal is to have this guitar finish done by this weekend. Possibly even put together.

I hit it with the second coat of gloss.
It came out really smooth. Just waiting for it to dry hard for a few days then I’ll do all the fine sanding, compounding polishing and buffing.
Rather than make a video where I put you to sleep. I made a little musical show of what the finish looks like now.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys. Not done quite yet though.
Next step is sanding it with 800grit or 1500 depending how smooth it is. Then 2500, and finally 3000grit.
High cut compoud, then glaze, then polish and a final buffing. Still have a little while to go before putting it back together.

This video will pretty much conclude this 6 part series.
I post one more video maybe if I can get the guitar to get that really deep shine.
This was a test subject. And I did learn a ton from it.
The main thing I learned was, pointy multifaceted guitars are very difficult to do a finish.
I might do a wax / degreaser and hit the face and back with more high cut see if I can get that deep shine I am looking for. I did burn though in spots. Mainly toward the lower horns. I think there was less clear in those areas. I touched those spots up and it looks good now. I will be selling it off, which was my original plan. Hopefully whoever gets it will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed doing this project.

Here is a final video.
I hope you guys enjoyed going through this journey with me.
Enjoy.
