I hold my picks about the same and switch between the tip and switch to the side as you show.
The side seems to cut highs when I need that....very effective when I play some Jazz or chord-melody style too. My middle and ring fingers are used with the pick to play triads and single notes too. Back in the late 60's I played 5-string Bluegrass banjo for 5 years, or so; so, just transferred what I learned from that period to my guitar playing, but for many years, used the Fender small jazz picks, but minus the metal finger picks. I later switched to the standard Fender medium that you use today.
