This term is very commonly used in the discussion pages of popular online forums dealing with guitars, in which the cork sniffers are the ones that argue and debate over the subtleties of various factors that contribute to tone, such as wood types used, guitar pickup types, body shapes, finishing methods, manufacturing process etc.
The term is generally used to imply that these very people don't really have any experience with the actual playing of the instruments, but they are simply analyzing or evaluating tone based on theory or science, instead of just listening.
It is people who insist on the "best" (ie, most expensive) and frown on less expensive guitars. The expression comes from an analogy to those connisseurs of fine wines who "pretentiosly" stop to sniff the cork and soak up all that expensive wine aroma before deciding it is good enough for them. A cork sniffer wouldn't go near an "inferior" PRS like an SE or an S2.
They will tell you that a "real" PRS has to cost well over $3,000.00.
A true cork sniffer would own only private stock and wood library models.
So far it is pretty transparent, best I can tell.Ok, what’s a cork sniffer ?
