I was in a great mood today because my new guitar arrived. On the way home I ran over something that hit my oil filter removing it from the car as I was driving. I have a sandwich plate (gear heads know what that is) between the block and the filter so I can run a mechanical oil pressure gauge. The plate was bouncing between the road the the car remaining attached only by the steel braided line running up to the gauge. I pulled off the road into a driveway to find a trail of oil behind me and a dangling adapter plate. I checked the oil and the dip stick was dry. I'm hoping that I didn't fry any bearings or rings or the turbo. It's supposed to rain all weekend so I'll be driving the Mrs. Wavmobile for a while till I can fix my car. What a way to ruin a beautiful day. OK, I'm gonna go play my new guitar now, got some blues to work out.

$H!T sounds about right Wav...damn man, I was only expecting here rock and roll myths and legends about your new guitar.

I hop there's no major damage...

Enjoy that guitar if you can.

Sh!T was pretty much what I said when I realised the guy in the next lane was coming across... Said it again when I came off my bike! Hope your car is OK Grant. And enjoy that new gut fiddle !

How long did you drive the car after the impact?

If you got off the road and shut down the car quickly enough, the car may be okay.

The low down, no oil blues ...........

Riding High on wed. ........took my honey for a drive ..........blew out my oil pan, now I wish I weren't alive.......tell me doctor.......doctor tell me what am I gonna do.......
I got the low down broke pan dangling, ......oh the no, no oil blues....

Sorry not making fun --- really THAT SUCKS Grant --- agreed with the guys if you got it shut down rather quick --- todays oils coat the inner engine so well....you are probably fine.

Sorry to hear that Wav. Life is full of peaks and valleys. It stinks real bad when the happen in the same day.

I drove it for maybe a block, not sure what it was that I hit. By the time I was in the service bay at a tire shop that I pulled into, there was hardly any oil trail left, I had already lost it all. I'm taking the day off today to jack the car up and see what it looks like underneath. I do have full coverage insurance and perhaps I can get a rebuilt engine outta this. It's not suppose to start raining until 5pm so I have time to check it out.

Sh!t... Hope your insurance doesn't give you some bad news because of the sandwich plate...

I use my cellphone as a dashcam whenever I drive. I pulled this from my phone and trimmed the time down to 1 minute before hitting the obstacle. I call this video "Beautiful Day to Sh!t in less than a minute.

I jacked the car up yesterday and found what I expected to see. The hollow bolt that secures the sandwich plate to the block is broken off. There are some threads showing and I'll try to work it out this weekend after the rain stops. I think I may have used locktite when originally installed this 11 years ago so I may have my work cut out for me.

Well this is NOT going to be an easy job. The picture below is the oil filter housing and you can see that the hollow threaded area where the filter screws on to is all one piece with the housing. This threaded section is what broke and this whole piece needs to be replaced. A bunch of sh!t needs to be removed from the front of the engine in order to get to the all of bolts. Looks like I'll be working on my guitar today, not the car.
