The ad says good frets. We will see tonight. It looks like there might be a crack at the input jack, the owner said that it is peeling, but I think it was dropped on the jack and split the wood.

Oh yeah... Those ebony boards really contract a lot if they are not properly maintained. If that's the case, you might notice some fret sprouting. Not hard to fix, and you'll probably want to roll those fretboard edges anyways... It'll be a killer playing guitar if you go the extra mile!

I can attest to the fret sprout thing. Both of mine(SG and V) were pretty bad when I got them.

Both were acquired during, or towards the end of, winter months. Both were cured completely by a couple of good bore oil rubdowns...two weeks later, no more sprout at all. Now I just oil them maybe once a year. The sprout has never returned.

I went to take a look at the guitar. There was a big crack right where the jack is on both sides and you could see where the wood was splitting up like at least an eighth of an inch. He was asking 550, and I told him that was too much and I offered him 300. He said that wasn't enough the lowest you would go is 450. I passed on it

smart move -- he is a douche -- no one wil pay that for a guitar that has the jack plate half ripped out--

SGJ--- SGJ--- SGJ

Oh wow how people think just because it says Gibson on it it must be worth lots just for the name ha ha

Hard to pass on a guitar for sure but having a issue like that sure helps

Yeah, broken Gibson=broken. Not worth it unless priced accordingly. If you must repair, you must not pay retail.
I got mine (all wood construction in tact...no hardware, other than pickguard, truss rod cover, and ground wire, shipped to my door) for well under what his lowest price was.
Granted there were pickups, bridge, tuners, pots, caps, and jack in the one you looked at...but if you’ve gotta re-fin, after injecting glue in to a fracture...well...$300 to $350 is all I’d have gone IF I liked the neck, and pickups...$400 if it felt like a dream, and I could envision a keeper when handling...and he threw in a case.

Sounds like a Wise decision you made. I know I wouldn't take it.

Clue me in my SG loving bothers & sisters. Other than 24 frets, what is the difference between a Gibson SG and a Gibson SGJ? Does the J stand for Junior?
