Someone will have a meltdown here ( no names mentioned) you announcing not liking Kiss or Maiden….So this post may highlight the immense diversity of influences we all have here on TTR. And here comes my major confession upfront: I never really got into either ACDC or Maiden or Kiss. That's not to say I didn't like them (honestly, I don't care for Kiss at all) - I could listen to any of their songs anytime I hear them, but I never sought them out nor have I ever purchased one of their albums.
I grew up on a super wide array of music, including, Johnny Mathis, Burt Bacharach, Elvis - both the King and Costello - The Police, Linda Ronstadt, Miami Sound Machine, Olivia Newton John, Michael Jackson. I still like to listen to any of these whenever I hear them. Getting into guitar pushed me deep down a guitar-centric path from which I would only years later emerge. Nowadays I am hugely influenced by guitarists that most guitarists have rarely heard of like Carl Verheyen, Mike Landau, Christophe Godin and mostly jazz musicians more than anything else anymore, such as Miles Davis (one of my top 3 favorite musicians of all time), Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Coltrane, and they're all mostly passed on and didn't even play guitar.
The type of music I've had the most creative output with is electronic. There was a period of almost a full decade where I listened to mainly this type of music including guys like Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, µ-Ziq, Autechre, Boards of Canada, etc. Many of you have heard a bit of that I've posted here in the past.
I've been thru an extreme metal phase, an ambient soundscapes phase, an adult-oriented contemporary pop phase, my Nana and Gramp's album collection from the 40s and 50s phase, a world music phase, a booty rap phase, a brief Vaporwave phase, a found sound phase, and I guess I would now have to say I am currently in-between phases at the moment. Looking for an interesting new genre of music to dive into.
