Just an example of how things are billed out. I'll dig up a sheet that shows how the personnel are referred to just for fun.

So you referred to the Ratt bass player as a support person simply for that reason? I ask because again, those of us who do not run production companies do not see it that way. I suppose as a one up job in a studio but I cannot see Rush production company calling Geddy a support person. Or Steve Harris or Billy Sheehan. Longstanding Members of a band are not temporary roles.

You can call a bass player anything you want. All i did was explain my comment on musicians in a supporting role.

It doesn't describe anything though. The type or work etc. Also, as a touring rock act I suspect it may be quite different.

We live in very different worlds. Its totally cool to see it any way you like.

I've always been a supporting musician in all of the bands i ever served in.

Yes,

To me, everyone in any musical project is direct support for the band leader.

I'm sure everyone has their own opinion, which is totally cool. I'm fine with whatever title you want to hang on whomever and it seems like a waste of energy - to me - to be almost 'upset' that someone uses different terminology than you.

Its cool if you want to call the band a "family" or group or whatever term you prefer, and guess what? Thats totally ok too!

Its a different world when its a primary income source.

I think we've had this debate before over our differing perceptions.

Are you really saying you have never been in a working band in which all the members were equal? For purposes of writing, performing and recording? There very often is not a "band leader" that directs the other members, and each person is an integral part of the band, not a "supporting" member. I would never have joined any band in which I was just considered hired help personally.

All the bands I have ever been in.. we were all equal contributers .

There was never a band leader ..
We all agreed to something or we didn’t, the former more so than the later,, in the cases of egos, or tempers.
We would work it out or find a new member.
I have never been in a band that played for a living though.. it was just for fun.. and relaxation.

I was offered a paying job in a family friend's 6 night a week working band in 1980 for $125.00/week. My Mom lowed me to drop out of high school because she knew how much it meant to me, but i had to promise to go to adult school, which i did, graduating in 1984.

Other than my very first garage band, I've never played without being paid. Even Bad Dog was a business, first and foremost.

Funny, that it just doesnt bother me. It makes more sense to me that it be managed like a business.

At its peak, Bad Dog was a huge money-making machine. During the first lock down, we were the only working band available for hire in SoCal and we worked non-stop. From private estate functions, to wedding receptions on remote ranches, we were the "go to" and we named our price.

There is a certain banquet hall in Glendale that served as a "musical speakeasy" during the lockdown.

It had construction fencing up and the windows and entrances were boarded. The band would rent plain white vans to move equipment in and out. It looked like it was under rennovation.

Inside, it was a full scale supper club and dance hall - the only one we knew of in the area. It was open every night except Sunday during the lockdown.

Now, there was also a 5 night a week "speakeasy" (hall,/venue) operating in La Jolla right on the ocean at this time too.

It was an invitation only venue. People were hungry for a live music venue and the $$$$$ came rollin in.

If i didn't play, i didn't eat.

I think what i see most often is the lack of direction in bands and a lot of internal conflict.

Bad Dog became that way - eventually - after it evolved past having a designated band leader and they - ultimately - tried to run it as an equal partnership and, TBTH, it quickly fell apart without the structure.

I rather enjoyed the work, and especially the money...i earned enough with Adrian's Fake Slash/AFD to buy a Geuine Gibson Les Paul.
