Possible SG Scratch Build:

So I've been reading up on the finish process for mahogany and I've been practicing doing nibs on a scrap (bound) Fender neck for training

You actually file the ends of the frets to fit flush against the binding, then you flat file the binding down to fretboard level.

This is nowhere near as difficult as people say it is...maybe it is on a refret, but not on a 'from scratch' spproach.

I've heard that from a number of people....

Interesting that so many of the SG body and neck kits that are available are mahogany body with maple cap (1/4") and maple neck...

So, one of my colleagues here and I have been discussing this build. He does a lot of custom builds privately.

He suggested a mahogany body SG with a 3 piece neck-through design.

The core shaft would be maple with machined grooves. A section of mahogany would slide into place on each side of the maple core.

The planks would be standing up, not laying flat.

The neck would then press-fit into the body via a tongue and groove joint....

I think we gonna make it ourselves from the SG template. My colleague has all the woodworking tools and planers at home plus a plunge router.

The key to making this guitar is the tongue and groove fit of the 3 neck planks (which stand on end to form the neck) and the tongue and groove press fit ofvthe completed neck into the body.

@gball, we both know what models you mean above. Especially those with T Tops. MMMM
Of course some of my other favorite Gibson's other than SG/ 1275's are a combination of Maple/Spruce Tops, Maple/Mahogany back and sides, and Mahogany/Maple/Rosewood/Ebony fretboards which are found on Byrdlands, 335-355's and 135-175 J200 J45, Dove type hollow and semi hollow guitars.

No one will ever remove the sweet sounds of these guitars in the hands of my favorite players who donned them.

For @gball. As Per Alex Lifeson: "his advice for today's guitar shopper? "No two guitars are the same. You could find six Les Pauls or 355s, and they'll all feel different than each other. It's a good idea to get what you feel comfortable with, what you really want. You can always fix up a guitar the way you want it, but it's nice to start with something that's already there. So the hunt might take more patience, but it's worth it."
