Sorry I got off onto cars again....

No problem, I love old muscle cars. Any 66-72 are my favorite. I've had a bunch myself. Mostly Chevelle's. My pride was a '72 Chevelle with a built 350. It was bright yellow, and stuck out. Yup, got me in a lot of trouble. I'll have to dig up some photos.

I drove a muscle car once for a couple of days. It was a lot of fun until I discovered that it had drum brakes - I just avoided learning that the hard way. But I never again tried to do more than one stop from 100mph. Smoke would result. Can't remember what it was - sorry.

Don,

One of the first things we did was swap in 1970 Charger front discs and added rear disc setup from a Lincoln Versaille...

Did you do the suspension as well? Another memory is that if you pushed down on a corner and released it, it would still be flopping around ten seconds later. In fact suspension and handling were the worst aspects of the car (cars, they all seemed to be like that).

I remember a track day at Goodwood Circuit. It was organised by the Corvette Owners Club, and most of them turned up with L88 conversions. On the straights they were very quick, but on the corners they were a disaster. Fastest times of the day were a pair of Rover SD1 - one mine, the other a friends, then third was a VW Golf. The first Vette - a monster - came fourth, and it was a full three seconds a lap slower than the Golf. Of course the rear suspension of a Vette is a very special breed of incompetent.

At the time, I was racing circle track cars (dirt 1/4 mile oval) so I had all kinds of those developments at work. I built up my own rear leaf springs from two sets, added a rear sway bar from a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A, added the short 1970-up Charger (B body) front sway bar, super heavy shocks, and urethane bushings...along with DOT 5 silicon brake fluid. It was a great handling car for its day...

OK, a track car is an animal of an entirely different colour. My Rover had fully modified suspension with Billstein gas dampers, vented discs and a pair of Garrett turbos added to the engine. It had coil spring rear suspension, and after one race where the brake pedal hit the floor after one lap, I changed the callipers to 6-pot (plus the ventilated discs).

I used to put V8's in Chevrolet Vega's and totally rework the suspension and brakes....something that never was done on most swaps...I will try to find pics later tonight...

My Chevett.....after a drunk driver went off the hwy and thru my front end. One foot to the right, and I'm probably not here today.

My friend Steve wasn't in the passenger seat anymore when I came thru.....he landed in the trunk after breaking the back seat.

Lincoln vs Chevett. Lincoln always wins!
