PHOS: Major try from Writing, Tracking, Mixing & Mastering

This week, the tracking song has a keyboard in it, spacing that in the mix right before the mix even happens next week. The mix song is one of my favs & so is the master song for this Friday release. Pretty cool when there is more than usual emotional attachment going on.

As the learning moves forward..small moves, small EQ changes, small gain staging changes the whole process vs letting the end figure it all out. This weeks songs is open sounding, almost playful in a way. Fun stuff..back to work..
 
Simply having a blast learning all this mixing & mastering. Do have 3 new songs in dif stages of tracking. They have been recorded way way dif now i know the back end process better. DROWN #2 of 5 on EP for release on Valentines Day,


 
There is now 12 dif speakers or headphones to listen to for testing. All at the push of a button. From pure 2 channel power amp only, Pioneer integrated amp, Sherwood receiver and active nearfields,

It has so much brought back the enjoyment of listening to the music i grew up on. How much dif an amp and speaker combination can sound. You can choose, modern - tight focus or warm old school or a combo of both. I like the power amp with the KLH 23, its modern clarity with older warmth. detailed but with a lil personality.

Cool thing is when it sounds good on all of them. Stop the mixing - mastering process & leave well enough alone . BUT. the focus is on what others listen on these days, ear buds, crappy computer speakers first & foremost. Then enjoy dif flavors personally.

Amazing what radically dif sonic info comes out of simply listening on something else.
 
Nothing, Song 3 of 5 on EP for 2/14. Just having a blast with all old these speakers & amps. Amazing how the same song can sound so dif. Or change amp & with same speaker. The Heathkit as37 speakers have a horn. How incredibly good that has become for the speaker for regular TV listening & vocal clarity. Super detailed especially watching the News or non musical things. They sorta place the vocals like they are coming directly out of the mouth of person speaking.

 
DAGGER #4 of 5 for next weeks EP, excited to get into the new tracks that have been recorded since December when started this thread on learning. learned to be much more direct in the tracking capture & vocals forward from the door. It is fun, oh how we learned, it was always about the capture before going into studios to record. I left em a mess to clean up probably..lol Happy Weekend all, -15 with 50 mph wind in Central PA

All the hard work learning has really helped me be a better musician in our band. This EQ, gain staging, understanding transient attack in a mix. Sure has transferred to the band room. Didn't think it would be so ramped up this year at this age with a band, figure this is the last go round for many reasons & let it rip.

Song #5 is set for Friday release of the EP. Then the EP drops on valentines day. How cool it was to listen to it before the publish. The continuity ,the struggles in music be recorded way back when. Then trying to re record some parts now & not lose the 'theme"

Actually glad it is done. The next batch of new music has all been tracked since undertook this learning to mix & master challenge. So much easier when you think about, placement, phasing,depth, balance & especially gain staging. Not nearly as much needs done on the back end if your energy is in the (capture) vs fixing in the box. Good stuff & mucho respect to the album engineers & producers we grew up on. The tape cutting, track bouncing maniacs that taught me all this ,
 
Tracking today for a new song. had killer drum session on Sunday to come up with a slight pause back beat to key of off for main feel & groove.

Nothing like a Plexi for thick/clear rythym tracking. Having the Brown/68/Super bass options is incredible when you get under the mic. Each EQ shift is precise in the mix. My fav clear rhythm cab set up. Mics out a tad in phase letting it be open but no room influence yet,

Then Mr JCM 800 is going to come slice & dice it all up like no other..
