P-90s

I really, really like blackonblack. Nice. Soapbox? Are they just another shape of P90s?

There are two descriptions of P-90 pickups - Soapbar and Dogear. The descriptions have to do with the type of covers and mounting of the pickups, but internally they are the same thing.

If you look at Dave Sloven's post above (post #79), he has a soapbar P-90 pickup on his SG Junior. They are called that because their shape sort of resembles a bar of soap.

Kevinpaul's pickups in post #78 above show the Dogear P-90 pickups. They have triangular flanges (the "dog ears") on each end of the pickup. These are used to fasten the pickup to the guitar body.

Yaaa, thanks Smitty. I got that far, I was just checking on magic/guts. What do you call the third kind? You know, the ones that look like P90s?!? They are narrower and longer than soapbars, right?
And then, and then, the humbuckers. Are the split black/black vs black/white the same? Just covers? And the solid cased ones don't split. Do I have that?

I don't know about the third kind of P-90 you mention. Do you have an example of a guitar with the type of pickup you mean? I suspect you may be referring to another type of single coil pickup.

As for the different colors of bobbins on humbuckers, yeah, it's cosmetic. Humbuckers with one black and one cream-colored bobbin are called "Zebra" pickups.

As for splitting the coils on a humbucker, you certainly can split them if they are covered! (The pickups you call "solid cased" are referred to as "covered" pickups). The Les Paul Studio I recently assembled has split humbuckers and they are both covered. The ability to split the pickup has to do with the kind of wire that comes out of the pickup. If the wire is a simple wire with a wire braid (shield) on the outside, you can't split it. If the pickup has three or four wires, you can split the pickup, regardless of whether it's covered or not.

OK, cool. Except I thought all P90s were single coil? I'm talking about the covers on my Epi LP Special I P-90s.

Thanks for the info.

Some people prefer the dogear mounting because they feel it is more 'direct' and 'solid', or just because they think it looks cool. The soapbar mounting has better height adjustment but be careful regarding the Gibson type that has the pickguard mounting like an SG. Some aftermarket replacements (like Bare Knuckles) don't have the sort of baseplate that fits the Gibson 'batwing' mounting. That was the case with my SG Junior so it had to be converted to the more conventional mounting of running the two screws through the pickup into the wood of the guitar, with foam underneath. The yellow Les Paul above with the soapbar has the conventional mount type (they actually have a plate in the bottom of the cavity that the screws go into, rather than straight into the wood). The empty holes for the 'batwing' mount can be seen either side of the soapbar in my SG Junior. SG Classics have the same system.

This is the pickup mounting that came in my SG Junior and is also found in various other models that mount soapbar P-90s to a pickguard. On the Bare Knuckle P-90 the baseplate had rivets where those phillips screws are. The nuts are where the screws into the wood at the bottom of the pickup cavity go now.

That photo is a bit blurry but I think you can see the rivets.

Here's the resistance test result on the warranty card:

And I figured you to be a scatter-wound humbucker fellow...

Nice timing Dave! I’m waiting for a “hot wound” set of P-90s from Manlius, and I look forward to seeing the similar sheet he sends with them, and how the numbers compare with BK.
