One Off Hopkins Modded Marshall

10 lbs Gibson Standard straight in to this JCM 800 I took on to do a one off mod for.

No FX Loop, Hopkins DC Htrs. 10 hours of true point to point non coplanar layout work on the preamp.

Target was Fear Factory tone. Not as smooth as most of my designs. This has plenty of treble on tap for the user.

It was a bit of a challenge for me to step away from the smooth circuits I worked hard to perfect.

Not bad...it's close to a modded Origin, but nowhere near as much gain production.

Thank you. This is to the spec request of the owner (Band -Fear Factory) It is all tube four stages non cathode follower (German Design ish) post tone stack master volume no Clippers or non Jose based. Many guys confuse clipping with gain which in theory is the difference between turning up a Marshall to ten (with gain modifications) and adjusting the db output by master volume vs medium gain in conjunction with diode or transistor symmetric or asymmetrical clipping. I can usually hear the difference.

Mark Cameron perfected it in my opinion. Some guys take it further but to me it is like hearing something riding on top of an ac circuit in your home such as a net gear transmitter to receiver for Netflix etc… in a large home.

Huge difference in tone. Different wheel house. The owner has one of my Pandora mods and asked for something less smooth. Believe it or not that was a challenge as that has always been a high gain benchmark for me.

Thanks for listening & posting.

Love to see pics of that David.

Attached is an example of my point to point work as removing components from “this type type of pcb” is a good thing to my ear.

At times I may add assemblies beneath the PCB as well.

I am about to start building a few entire amps from the naked chassis up using Heyboer Transformers & my choice in components.

Though I get my DC Heater & Effect zLoop boards from Jason Tong @ Headfirst Amplification, my amps will be hand wired to spec turret board.

They will indeed resemble Marshall Super Leads in aesthetics at first I will likely move to custom face & back panels in black with gold lettering for a stealthy appearance.

A lot of great work there to be certain. I apologize if my comparison (comment) seemed like a negative, because it's not intended to be that way at all. You've done some incredible work on that amp.

First and foremost, tone and gain production are both very subjective I think.

The main studio where I work (for a living) has a Mike Morin Modded JCM800 - 2204. It has the Tim Casswell style extra gain stage, numerous cap value changes and a rear panel FX loop with a switch. I am always so disappointed in that amp when we use it, because to get any real saturation from it, I still have to use a TS-9 and that increases the noise floor, so to me, it's just such a waste of time when I can plug in just about any other amp in the studio and get more grit from them. I feel the same way about the studio's, hugely overrated Overdrive Special.

When I discovered the HF mod for the Origin, and struck up an online friendship with JT, It was the first time I heard an amp that I really liked without a full pedalboard. Forum members @ivan H and @syscokid put their talents together and did not only the HF mod and the Jose Arredondo diode clipping mod on my Origin 50, but also changed the amp's voicing through the use of different cap values, and developed a method for scaling back the excessive voltages with modified droppers as well.

Since nobody has ever posted stock origin voltages, we were "in the dark" so to speak when we encountered extremely high voltages following the HF mod on the Origin 50. The Origin 20 is cathode biased and the Origin 50 is fixed bias, so when you perform the origin 20 mod to the Origin 50, you start seeing things like 385 volts on V2 pin 1 and nobody has ever documented this until @syscokid charted out all the requiste voltages and took steps to bring them down into acceptable limits.

Good comments on the clipping diodes. I see the "Jose" mod to work more like an attenuator than a gain producer, IMHO anyways.

Nothing but respect for your work.

Here's some inside shots of the Morin Modded JCM 800 owned by the studio:

Amp 1.jpg

I saw some of the absolute worst, sloppiest work ever inside this amp. I was asked to get it running again after it stopped working.

He sanded the values off some of the capacitors, sufficiently (in some cases) to allow Mylar to be exposed and attempted to "hide" resistor values by painting them with conductive paint. The amp had such incredible hum/buzz that it really was shocking. I found one of the coax braids was very near, almost touch a voltage source, so I re-routed and shrink wrapped it and virtually eliminated the noise.

All I saw here was a huge mess and trying to "hide" your work by sanding/painting over color codes is ridiculous since you can easily test any component and determine its relative values.

May all that you do be blessed...

I really, really like the tone of that amp. Very unique for a Marshall-style circuit and nicely done.
Closest thing I can think of from that clip is the sound of a Diezel, and that is a very good thing indeed.

Great job on restoring the Mike Morin amplifier.

Yes that degree of hiding values is ridiculous heat shrink is good enough for amp porn. I have devices that can test all components in circuit if I desire.

Here is a studio excerpt I have one of my fourth stage normal builds I have from on of my CD cuts with just a Li’l amp porn for about a minute and four seconds.

And I’m hard-core so I will not be offended and no offense was taken nor was it perceived.

Keep up the great work my friend.

Thank you very much. My eldest son has a custom Diezel VH4 Blue Face Peter Diezel built and signed for him in 2011.

Amazing amplifier!

Very good tones in this video!

Nice job on the amps in both clips, very well done (I think I prefer the 2nd one, but that's just my personal preference). I agree on the sanding off of component values & use of goop being ridiculous too. Cheers

I totally agree on the second amp clip as that’s where my ear lands me.

But this amp at top was by special request. Individual stated he would like to have one of “my mods” and then I receive the amplifier he then stated he had recently acquired a Pandora which is what you hear in the second recording.

He said he loves the Pandora but wanted another amp less smooth and wished for something more aggressive and not as smooth.

Believe it or not I had to work at fighting my nature lol. But as I tell everyone customer service is second only to tone, and we all know tone is subjective so the guys get what they want…I hope. 7 years and I rarely see me work up for sale.

Thank you for the kind words.

David
