Ohm setting question

OK, so if I go by @chilipeppermaniac last post and go by that link. Then that means the EVH 112 I have, which is 16ohm 30w, should not be paired with the 50w amp I have if I am going to crank the amp up beyond about 60% power. Which is weird because that 112 is advertised as being specifically designed to pair with the 5150iii 50w amp. By what I am understanding so far, if I do blast that amp, I will more than likely damage the speaker.

We had failures with multiple combinations, 1x12, 2x12 and 4x12.

Only the 1984 Jackson 4x12 could hold up.

Yes, you said that Jackson was a 200 watt cab. Hence it could handle being Driven or Overdriven like with a Percussive attack and ballsy eq and a TS9...

200/4 =50 so each Jackson speaker should survive.

100/4 =25. Survival iffy as you have found out x8 . My other thoughts here are did all 4 speakers get damaged in the 4x12? Or did one, 2 or 3 go and you swapped in another 1 for 1 new for damaged? Also, any clue what the amp was biased at? Specs on tranny output etc? I keep searching for other factors than just too low a speaker wattage handling vs amp watts/eq causation.

Also Robert,. All your speakers have been 16 ohm and amp set the same too right? No chance you used 8 ohm units and had essentially 4 or 8 ohm wired Cabs driven by amp set at 16 ohm, right?

Yes...

All speakers used were 16 ohm variants. Ohms values were always matched to the amp. I'm pretty OCD about this ...

Yup. Running a 30 watt speaker in a 50 watt amp is bad. I cannot fathom why they have it as the matching cab.

This is one that the amateur player/electronics newb in me does not understand. BUT, I think I may seek to find the answer to, A La Sherlock Holmes.

Please post the details on this particular amp you used. which power and preamp tubes you had installed, EQ settings used, Bias settings on the amp, Pictures of rear of amp for layout of jacks, switches, Specs etc. and if Open Back and any pics of the Greenback, Cream, G12T 75's date codes, cone codes etc. {Pics of the pedalboard and how it is wired up and where it is plugged into the EFFects Loop etc.

I am definitely trying to figure out HOW so much destruction gets caused, WHERE is a missing link(s) to help you or us avoid similar fates of any of our speakers. Oh yeah, and what is the Stock speaker this amp comes with? A Buddy is considering buying a DSL40 C SO I have a vested interest.

40C used the 70/80 speaker. 70 watts as well. Should be plenty.,

I think the combination of high volume, lots of bass and resonance may have toasted Robert's speaker. Imagine a bass guitar through a guitar amp cranked up, for example. Not overpowered but over excursioned.

Liveevil, As far as I know the V type is stock for the DSL40 Combos. IT is a 70 watt speaker. I am not sure if Robert blew this one up too, or he was just hunting tone. If I remember right, he had 2 DSL's at one point and was rolling tubes and all kinds of stuff.

I also wonder if proper break in of speakers was done prior to Robert's heavy thumpin of his amps.

I had (2) identical DSL40C'S

I was running B759 Genelex Gold Lion preamp tubes with regular Genelex EL34 power tubes.

IIRC, I was biased around 37ma???

The 4x12 was a closed-back vintage Marshall cab.

This was my board at the time...

Speakers were all sent to Celestion and when they declined to replace, i told them not to bother with returning them.

Stock speaker in both amps was a 70/80.
