Oh come on 20k?

Right. They are built differently from any other pickup:

The magnets are sideways, on edge, and mounted in the middle of the coils. The sound of them is really unique - nothing at all like a mini-hum. I'd say tone-wise it's a cross between a regular humbucker and a Tele single-coil. Lots of bite, but still plenty of girth in the tone, and will cut through the mix like a bandsaw through gov'ment cheese.

Wow. I had no idea!

Seems like all the major pickup builders have a version of the Firebird pickup. The only ones I have tried are Gibson, the alnicos in the Custom Shop and vintage guitars and the modern ceramics that they have been using since I think the '90's. Personally, I don't have any problem with them being ceramics - a good pickup is a good pickup, no matter what's under the cover. I've played too many crappy alnicos to believe magnet type really makes a difference that is greater than overall design.

Dig this...I put 7.93k/7.88k Alnico II's (GFS!) In my 2016 Gibson SG back in January. Ok...decent sounding, very PAF-ish tone. Not exciting.

Last night, I was thinking about what my friend Fil Oliveri told me about how the pickups were adjusted when he inspected Angus' SG - almost touching the strings.

In kind, I raised my bridge pup up to maybe .045"/.060" from the poles/strings when fretted at the 21st.

WOW!

It sounded bigger, fuller and with even better individual string clarity.

I was floored!!!!

I've found that humbuckers need to be very close to the strings for the best tone. At least for what I am going for, and you and I have similar taste. The magnet is still quite far away from the strings even when they are close.

Makes sense to me though - the pickup is an inductor, so the more the strings are vibrating in the magnetic field the more inductance the the more "everything."

They are like a drug. Nothing like them anywhere else; the combination of the neck-through and those pickups is singular. And they are HUGE so for us big guys it's the only guitar that looks like it belongs on you! You really need to play one Robert.

Fact, ever since I picked up that '15 Firebird Vintage Sunburst It has quickly become the guitar I actually spend time playing at gigs on. And not only is she highly playable, she is a sweet looking piece of poetic artwork to look at....

Neck through design is an important feature of the Firebird so best advice is not settle for a cheaper version that simply glues a neck into a guitar body. Yer Gibson makes those too.

Here's a pic of my backside. Te-Hee-he..

And here's I transport ye olde Firebird to gigs!

The pups are ceramic & while hot they are also capable of a decently broad frequency response. The trick....? Set the controls on your amp to work with & compliment the guitar & stand to be pleasantly pleased with the dynamic results!

FYI, did an outdoor gig yesterday afternoon with this '15 Firebird & the little 22 watt SuperSonic I've come to favor so much with it's fat'n scream'n 6V6 power output.... & I was told that the well known Woodstock guitarist waiting in the wings to play was heard commenting on the fvk'n sound I was getting out of this little 1x12 combo amp (while on 4-5 volume!)

I'll take that as a compliment from someone I know has a big guitar ego & very hard to get any praise from.

.Right now, I'm still trying to figure out how to add an EDS-1275 to my collection. I have looked at a few used ones, and I also found a set-neck kit that has the correct "open book" headstocks, so I am going to stay focused on this double neck project until completion....

This is one kit I have been eyeing...

I also went through the same dilemma with the Gibson doubleneck GAS. I considered and ruled out all kinds of alternate options from the gamut of decent (& some not so decent) manufacturers out there. In the end, I had to come to terms with 2 facts. 1st, the Gibson doubleneck is a specialty guitar that borders on being a visual gimmick as well as a useful tool. 2, I knew I would get very limited use out of this guitar in a live show which when you think about it is the only reason you need a doubleneck & not 2 separate guitars of 6 & 12 string configuration and the step price for even a used Gibson 1275 just didn't warrant or justify that expense!

But hey, as we see from the asking price for the Paigey #2 guitars, some people pay a lot of money for what they want & price means little to them. That said, 3-4 G's for a Gibson anything is not something I consider doing too often but to be honest, I did think about it when it came to getting a 1275. I just thought it through & decided not to! lol

I did decide to go with a beautiful white & gold Epiphone doubleneck when it was on sale for $200 off new! I figured I could give it a shot & easily come close to recouping my money should I not like it. Seemed like a plan so I went with it.

I am truly happy to report that I got over my 'Epiphobia' (fear of Epiphone headstocks) and that not only is the guitar shockingly gorgeous but the fvking tone is to die for!!! No joke. These pickups are simply old school beautiful sounding. They sound better than newer Gibson anything that I have 57 Classics in & I would have to go back into my vintage era Gibbys to find anything that sounded as full, defined & beautiful. I really don't think Gibson is making anything like this in a pickup today.

I am still happy with this decision these many months later.
And yes, this White fvking double neck is gimmicky as fvk & impressive as all hell when wielding it on stage. Double, hell, maybe even triple bonus points on this one!

Good Luck in your quest Robert. Hope whatever you decide that you end as happy as I am in the end.

Agreed on all points....but I look forward to running the 12 string side through my Marshall VS265 Chorus 2X12 combo and the 6 side through a pair of DSL40C's.

I'm actually looking at building my own, with Gibson-style, open-book headstock and working up a unique, somewhat "Gibson-esque" version of my Von Herndon logo for it...

Kind of like this...

Honestly: the "o" comes out looking like a "a" or "u". Van Herdan or Vun Herdun! Maybe I've had too many beers...

Sounds like a great idea Rob. Our last 2 posts passed each other in cyberspace by the way,.. just to put things in chronological context.
I like your idea & think it is perfect for you &... I'm certain that this guitar will certainly mean more to you in the end than anything else you could have bought.

IMG_0906.JPG I have a limited edition Epiphone Firebird, it is built very well. TV blue and they made 500 so instead of it costing $120.00 it was $125.00! I put mini humbuckers on it and it sounds wonderful. The pickups it came with were classic 57s. The guitar is like having a pig on your lap, a plank of mahogany makes my legs fall asleep.
