NGD - New Gibson Day - SG content

Ok, I have given it a quick playing and my first impressions:

It is a VERY different animal compared to the G400 I owned a couple of years ago. All my impressions about the SG have changed, and not because the G400 was bad in any way. It was just not the SG for me.

The 61 reissue is much lighter and comfortable to my body. I'm a small guy, 5'5", just a bit stronger and taller than Angus Young, I'm maybe more of a Robbie Krieger guy, and this SG feels just right.

It surprised me for having no neckdive at all. Maybe because it has Klusons instead of Grovers, so the headstock is lighter. But the guitar is lighter all in all. Well, the neck dosn't dive. I played it with a Fender tweed strap, not a thick leather one.

I lowered the bridge as much as I could and it doesn't buzz at all through the amp, so I guess I won't need to mess with the truss rod.

Pickups: I've been playing SSS stratocasters for my entire "professional" career, and both my strats have Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s so it doesn't require a puija board to figure out what I thought at first:

E Gibson 57s sound richer, MUCH higher in output, with huge bass and creamy mids, but definitely muddy due to the lack of brightness - for a 100% strat player

I have to play it a lot until I educate my ears for humbuckers again.

But still: the guitar is awesome.

The strats feel like luxury, the SG feels like power.

Just remember, my esteemed compadre...Strats and SGs don't replace each other...they compliment each other. As a long-time Strat and SG owner, I've learned not to try to make the SG fill a Stratocaster's role, and vice versa. Let them each fulfill their unique roles and you'll be happier.

Frank, I don't know. My American Stratocaster still feels like it will be my main guitar. But this Gibson is really an amazing rumble generator.

It' amazing for someone who has been playing bluesy/hard rock stuff on classic SSS strats around to pick up an SG and feel how it growls and roars out of the slightest picking.

Sum bitch thats a nice color on that guitar.love the shades and well what can i say Camel straights and a Zippo.Rock the fook on Sergio.i smoked many years but gave it up about 17 years ago.i got a few years on ya though
 
The best thing about this SG is that those Klusons are very lightweight, almost no noticeable neckdiving.
 
Funny thing is, back in late '95 I had this Guitar World issue that had a Gibson SG ad, and I remembered it being of a 60s reissue.

21 years later I would buy... a Gibson '61 Reissue.

I love what I call the rock n roll lifestyle. Guitars, zippos, cigarettes, band memorabilia, trashed Chuck Taylors, old Levi's, road worn guitar cases... That's pure visual art.

P.S. All this American stuff, the Gibson, the original Zippo, the Camels, are awfully expensive and some of them are VERY hard to find (don't even ask how I get real American Camels, not the european poop they sell here). :D

So I enjoy my things by not just using them, I love to create visual candy

Btw just saying... Of all these, the Levi's are an exception. They're cheap even though they're imported here, and last longer than 99% of the other fancy brands.

A pair of Levi's 501s or 505s easily outlives any Diesel or whatever sack of shite they sell for much more.

Dude, you need some Levis 527 Boot Cut ones. They are my favorite jeans.
 
thing is, I'm short and wear mostly converse chucks or nike bruins when I'm wearing jeans, so boot cuts make me look funny.

Occasionally I'll say to my wife before leaving the house "Does this look OK?" she almost always comes back with "Do you feel confident?".

I've been looking for a Worn/Satin Brown SG for a while now. Just waiting for the stars to line up, so to speak.
