Metal-- that is a great amp--for 100 you cant beat it

Mine did MARSHALL tone----

JUST like my SS Marshal Valvestate does-- but 20 watts for me is PLENTY -- the 100 was NOT getting used to its FOOL potential--- otherwise zero issues-- zero complaints that I recall it was a great load of fun for low dough dont let the haters get ya down --- truth is it doesnt HAVE TO HAVE TUBES to sound good----

Im playing a Roland Micro cube RIGHT on now the JC CLEAN setting and it sounds incredible with coffee on my desk on a cool Spring morning while NOT pissing off those still in bed----

ITs a good amp for 100 bills--- ENJOY

It works very well, and gives a wide range of voices - you could practice at home with the tilt low to the left, then go to a band practice and just change the tilt to the middle or more to the right... Or, change pickup voices when they're darker, as I did.

Very similar, but seems to be in the preamp whereas the Marshall presence control (at least in the Origin 20) is in the post amp. With the guitar tone control, the amps middle and treble control, the tilt control in the preamp and the presence control in the post amp - there should be enough control over the higher frequencies... :D

The tilt is very easy to turn and get where you want quickly.

Of course, the question for this thread is: what does the contour knob do???

As far as the contour knob, yea this is the first time I’ve seen it myself. Apparently what I read is that it changes the grit in the gain. I’m interested in playing with it and seeing how nasty it gets.
 
Holy crap on that riff I felt like I was ushering in the apocalypse!

Not quite sure I would use that much gain in a recording though. I had the contour dimed out and gain set to the 3 o’clock mainly for the lead which it’s freaking killer.

So for recording I’m still going to play around with it. I work nights and needed sleep I just wanted to see just what this amp is about. It’s dark with the VHT chromebacks you sold me years ago.

And I see what you mean by it being too much amp... if the volume had numbers it would of been at a 1 or 1.5...

And holy crap! Yea, no to the more powerful head. I think if it was any more powerful, I wouldn’t be able to even turn it on without getting noise complaints.

LOL eSG I actually thought about it but these houses were built in the 70’s...i think it would be like the scene in the “we’re not going to take it” at 50% volume. Cranking it I’d think I’d take out my wall, my neighbors wall, my neighbors cat, and possibly even my neighbor..
 
Ok I got a chance to really play with the dials today...I honestly don't see how the heads get such a bad rep! I mean I understand the combo but if you plug this thing into halfway decent speakers it freaking kills! This amp, at least through my speakers, is dark as hell. It wants to get deep. I found that if I keep it at the overdrive 2 channel, engage the FDD, dime out both the mid and treb, set the bass to between 11 and 12 o'clock, gain at around the 2 o'clock, contour i tend to leave around the 3-4 o'clock but that one is not AS important as the other's. I get a really nice 80's sound, bit of a chug (im in drop D with ernie ball cobalt slinkies 10-46) but enough head room for a bass to cut through. So im really confident if you mic'd it up this set up would cut through a mix real easy as is, especially with hot pickups. I then put the dinky down and plugged in my epiphone sg that has the stock epiphone PAF humbuckers. still a really good 80's metal tone. No pedals necessary. It does have a bit of a buzz to it so I'm going to get a behinger noise gate (its essentially the same thing as the boss noise gate just in a plastic case but reviews on it are fantastic) and for recording purposes im going to get an EQ pedal so I can make sure I get at least real close to this tone when I end up plugging it into my guitar interface.

This was exactly the tone I was chasing when i was working on getting the dinky put together. Freaking killer! and truthfully, no pedals except for a noise gate necessary. as for the cleans, if i disengage the FDD then its sparkly clean, especially with the EMG's. I'd be interested in putting it up against the fender just to see if it's that clean but to my ears its damn close. if you engage the FDD it wants to throw in a bit of a crunch to it. eSG knows what he's talking about. This thing has tons of tone, especially if you take the time to just dial it in. more modern stuff, you may struggle with, but you can definitely get around the Iron Maiden type tone (which...i think they did/do use Marshalls. Pedals, i havn't tried, don't really see a reason to at the moment. One I HAVE to get more cables, two I primarily use reverb and this amp's built in reverb is just fine to me for leads, for rhythm I run dry. but its got a built in flanger, chorus, delay, and chorus/delay built in, i haven't played with.

My ONLY gripe is that it doesn't have an LED to indicate if the effects are engaged.
