^ interesting. I new a fella who only had 2 pedals on his board, and SD1 and an SD1 - he had nice tone. &, that's pretty much what the Analogman King of Tone is doing.

I really like them. TBH, I rate MXR gear highly - I'm thinking about getting a Distortion+ because it has that fuzzy OD (it does not seem much like a distortion to me...) that I like, and it might stack well?

Apparently, the Catalinbread is based upon the Superlead Plexi whereas the Plexi Frive is based upon the JTM45. So, an opportunity to watch this video has arisen:

I will find perfection (at decent sound levels)! I keep edging up, 60db, but 70db does sound better, but 80db is a real sweetspot... Is 80 db too loud for home daytime playing in an apartment?

Thanks RVA - fun you say??? Today, I felt like 2 steps forward and 1 step back...

I've got the compressor, TS808 and amp boost working well, but it's about dialling in the best tone at 80db+ then controlling everything on the guitar volume and tone knobs - I think I'm where I need to be, and I've been practicing my scales as per the Paul Gilbert video you put up.

For the life of me, with everything else dialled in just right, I cannot get the Katzenkonig to sound anything other than terrible (it does not like the compressor or the tubescreamer, but sounds ok with the amps boost to fatten it up) - I might try it in the fx loop just because.. My power supply will be here tomorrow, so I can work with the Wampler delay/reverb which doesn't work on a battery.

I find pedals to be a source of irritation.

Issues like that will always be there. And once you think it sounds perfect, you will revisit the same setup some other day and think it sounds thin and lifeless. I suggest you forget about the notion that you will find the perfect guitar, pedals and amp, all with the perfect settings. The best you can hope for is to get enough experience to learn how to make appropriate adjustments each time with increasing alacrity. Music and playing is a dynamic activity and its quality is a subjective assessment based on temperament, attitude and a variety of other factors I am not smart enough to understand. And then one day, you decide you want to try a brand new sound!! Thankfully, there is never a goal line in music, so we are safe assuming that we may chase this dream as long as our health allows if we wish.
 
Just a comment on the speaker - it's good.

Compared to the 10" speaker in the 5W DSL this one is a lot lot better, doesn't need changing (the 5W DSL speaker is a horrible fizzy speaker; disgraceful that Marshall ship the amp with that speaker, imho). It's supposed to be a version of the Celestion V30 voiced to suit this amp; it's good. I have a 25w greenback which would fit in here, but I see no reason to change it - the V30 should get better and better with time is what folks say.

(In my case, might be nicer to be a lower wattage, so my lower volumes could drive it a bit more easily...)

Correct, Sir, kinda, yes.

Apparently, back in the day, plexis had two inputs and many folks jumpered them to get a combo of the two. So, this is a modern day version where to the left is one input and to the right is the other input. I like it virtually all the way to the left for practice by self, but in a mix with others or soloing or louder with pedals, you'd like want more open trebly sounds to the right. With the presence, treble and tilt, you won't be lacking in the soling with high gain pedals department - totally controls any possibility of flabby low end.
