...finally.

As everyone knows, Marshalls and SGs/LPs are a terrible mix...

(Note to Adrian: the Messa was the wrong voltage, and I didn't wanna piss around with a transformer...)

I had to rush back from work, receive it, and now rush back to work, so it'll be a day or two before I review it and detail the parts...

But, there's an amp, a few pedals, a few pedal connectors and a couple of longer leads for the send/receive loop.

I've got a Looper already, and there's two pedals on the way along with a power brick and a pedalboard (I just want a small 6 pedal board).

Popped home for an extended lunch and a bit of a play...

I wanted a nice amp and looked at many; there was a Mesa at a good price, but it was US spec, so would need a transformer, be hard to sell when I leave Korea, etc...

Then I saw a class 5 locally for $450 and really liked it:

marshall-class-5-combo-2009-2010-92126.jpg

...but, the issue is that the 5w amps I've previously owned (DSL5 and a Bugera) both sounded much better at 5w than at lower setting - you needed to control pre gain and power 'gain' in order to get good sounds at reasonable levels (I'm thinking 65-70db during the day, and 30-50b in the evening/night - please let me know if you think that's reasonable?); the Class 5 only has a volume.

Then I saw this and was blown away:

1w 50th anni JMP, but it was $1150, and I spent a week thinking about it, though fuk it, don't care about the money (probably should be $300 cheaper?), but it was sold...

So, I turned to the 5w Origin because it had the send/receive path so I could drive it with pedals to get breaking up tones at reasonable levels:

But, there were issues: I didn't want an 8 inch speaker (especially the crap one it comes with), it doesn't come with the footpedal ($99 more...), and I could never take it out to do open mike or local gigs/rehearsal (maybe a rehearsal), and I wanna develop into more than a fella that just plays at home.

Now, this 20w Origin ticks many boxes:

- gain control and master volume.
- 10" Celestion V-type speaker (I have a 25w 10" greenback I could swap into it to make it break up a bit earlier...
- send/receive FX loop.
- .3w setting /3w setting which gets excellent reviews /20w setting which will cover all my future needs.
- boost setting on the footswitch - I likey.
- the tilt (goes between the two plexi plug in modes) and presence are cool features.
- FX loop on the footswitch, so I can put a tad of delay/reverb in the FX as an always on, but easily turned off when I wanna do other stuff.

For $250 more than the 5w it made a lot of sense.

I took it out of the box:

OK, had a very short play and was very happy. I'm running late for work, but:
1) Love at first sight.
2) Surprisingly good sounds (under 70db) on all three power modes.
3) The two guitars sound completely different on this amp (more so than other amps I've tried).
4) It's not a DSL, it doesn't wanna break up too early - good job I have bought 3 pedals in anticipation of that very issue...

I will play more and report back.

First thoughts, money well spent.

Congrats on your new amp Grumpy!! hope it gives you what your looking for, sweet looking amp! Whats the weight looks heavy?

Thank you, my friends, for your kind words. I've been jamming with a friend tonight and enjoyed it a lot (he mentioned, being a good player but knowing nothing about guitar types, sounds, etc, that the LP special sounded just like Pete Townsend...

I dig the look of the Origins

Yeah, it looks cool. It feels great too (maybe the knobs could have a tad more resistance?).

Congrats on your new amp Grumpy!! hope it gives you what your looking for

It is perfect for me (but, it NEEDS pedals).

It's a really good sounding amplifier.

Yeah, it sounds good clean at every volume, but if you put the volume up and/or add pedals the you're in a great place!

MERRY CHRISTMAS...

Thank you, and you're right (I have a couple more goodies on the way too...).

So, I know the amp more now, and it's by far my favourite amp I've ever owned - very different from a DSL; this is where your classic late 60s and early 70s sounds are (as long as you have pedals...). I always loved my Randall RD, but the OD and gain was all in the amp, pedals were a waste of time - this Marshall Origin amp is the polar opposite.

The amp does sound good at any volume, it can be a bedroom amp on the low and mid setting - I prefer the 3w mid setting as you get more air, space, everything; that's where I will stay for most of the time - in my humble opinion, a 10" speaker 3,4,5 watt amp with volume and gain controls is the perfect 'bedroom' amp; I kicked it up to 20w for a short while (it's 2am here, and I'm in an apartment), and it was fantastic, better in every way, amazingly mind blowing, but not needed for home practice (it'd be great to gig with this amp at full volume though).

Unlike other tube amps I've played, the wonderfullness is not in the pre-amp - the Marshall likes the master volume up to drive the power tubes (again, the polar opposite of my small watt Randall amp).

Now, I have tried the amp and the tube screamer and the Catalinbread Rat/Tonebender 2 - just touched the surface; there are so many sounds here, and I'll try to share with you the voices.

The amp sounds good clean at 60db, but you need the SG to start pushing it because the special doesn't quite have enough oomph (for my liking) although you get nice chimey pop sounds with the special . This amp has surprisingly lovely cleans and pre-breakup sounds. You need plenty of volume (too much for 'bedroom' use) to get to break up and classic rock, early metal. I know you lot love Fender cleans, but this Marshall has a good clean sound (lacks reverb though...). This plexi style amp is soooooooo different in character to a DSL (which also sounds great, but has completely different characteristics).

A note here: I have the Origin 20 and my Yamaha THR10, and playing blues/light rock at 60db, as long as I put delay and reverb on the Yamaha AC30 setting it sounded good, not as good as the Marshall, and the Yamaha is $300, but it really was decent to play alongside the Marshall - lacked presence and thump and many other things, but the Yamaha THR10 is a good versatile amp, by the way.

So, obviously, I put the MIJ TS808 online to push the amp and it was really good. It didn't blow me away, probably needed another pedal (I have more coming tomorrow...) to get the classic 60s/70s sounds, but it was very pleasing. I now understand, like I have never done before, why the tubescreamer is such a great pedal. I suspect, tomorrow, when the pedal I bought to put in front of it comes, the TS will sound even better - at the moment, by itself, it's a bit on the light side at the volumes I am playing at, but the amp has the boost setting to help out (I will probably leave the boost on all the time because it sounds great).

The Catalinbrad RatKiller is a pedal I have wanted for a long time, so I was kinda worried that it might let me down. It's the best pedal I've ever owned (ok, I can only put that in perspective with this amp); fuk me, it's good. It goes from classic 60s rock (does Led Zepplin perfectly) through Sabbath and Metallica to stuff like the Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins - it is amazing (for the sounds I like) on this amp - my friend was also blown away by this pedal.

If I could only have three fuzz/distortion pedals then I'd get this amazing Catalinbread Katzenkonig, Wampler Velvet Fuzz and the MXR script Distortion+.

This amp loves, and needs, pedals, like nothing I've experienced before.

At the price, it's stupidly cheap. I now know that I'm a Marshall Plexi guy.

Nice to hear that you're digging this Catalinbread pedal. They're one of my favorite booteak pedal builders. The Katzenkönig seems to be a killer dirt pedal. Congrats on all fronts...

Those two guitars look nice parked next to that Marshall.

Yeah, they seem just about right, a LP special and an SG junior, for this amp. Although a 52 telecaster and a LP Custom might also be nice additions... :D

The Catalinbread and Wampler pedals are really top notch, imho. I have a Keeley pedal coming - it'll be my fourth, and I've never really loved any of the others; all were good pedals at fair prices, but just didn't quite do it for me...

The compressor didn't quite give me the option of pushing the TS which I was kinda hoping for, so I might look for another pedal to stack before the TS (I wonder if an MXR distortion+ at low drive levels would do the job?).

So, I'm getting to grips with this amp...

Started out getting break up at low volume with these settings - gain up, master volume down because that worked with my 1w Randall and my 5w DSL and Bugera tube amps:

20190420_201942.jpg

But this origin works very differently, the breakup seems to be in the power tubes rather than the preamp tubes.

Thus, my new, better sounding settings:

20190420_204140.jpg

With the master volume ramped up then the gain set at the appropriate volume levels (60db is kinda the sweets pot between sounding good and the wife not complaining...), the amp sounds good. These settings also allow me to give a bit more compression (not too much):

20190420_204131.jpg

The boost is always on, as is the compression, and we have a nice low grit sound, early breakup without having to dig in. Or, put on the TS808 for a grittier bluesy sound. Now, to set up the RatKiller to give the Zeplin sounds without the TS and punkier Pixies/Smashing Pumpkin sounds with the TS on - sorting that out will be tomorrow's work of the day... :D

Plenty of work to be done on the volume and tone knobs of the guitar to get all these pedals working at their best with a variety of sounds, but well worth the effort...

Very good to hear you are liking your amp, its a great feeling when you buy a piece of gear you really like Congrats!! By the way how are you liking those MXR cables?

Boost the TS with another TS. SRV was known to do this. About a month ago, I remember seeing a video where someone demonstrated a TS into a TS. The sound was massive even at very low volumes.

Try using the Katzenkönig to boost the TS... Or the TS to boost the Katz... Something very inspiring should come out of this combination... :dood:
