NAD, Marshall Origin 20.

Turn the gain down and up the volume.
Start with a clean base tone with a fuzz, don't try to boost a crunchy dive tone like an OD.
That's probably what was wrong. I'm still figuring this thing out. Now that I found the boost I'm getting some pretty good rock tone with just an OD and my new mid boost pedal. I think I like this pedal, I like it best post OD.

I'm finding the clean tone to be very bright and harsh. I'm letting it cool down now so I can open it up and check what tubes are in there since it was used. I'm hoping to find something stupid to explain the crap cleans.

I don't use the footswitch on any of my Origins - I keep the boost & loop always on with a TRS adapter in the FS jack.

Got 6CA7s in the stash?
I think those tubes work well in my O20's.
Warmer than the EL34s.

And put that GE-7 in the loop.
EQ on the back side does wonders for these amps.
Boost what you like and cut what you don't.

I saw the F/S jack, but it didn't come with a foot switch or power cord, just the amp. Are you saying I can't use the loop without a foot switch?

Yes.
Inexplicably, the loop is default off unless you use the footswitch.
Any TRS adapter or cable in the jack turns both the loop and boost on.
Or any 2-button TRS footswitch will function.

I have 3 I'm not using if you want one...

I edited the OP to add a pic. Here are a couple more.

Other that a few tiny nicks in the tolex on the top this thing looks almost new...

Looks like the stock tubes are still in it. White label Marshall branded in V1 and V3, re branded in V2, and JJ EL-34s. I don't know what the white labels are, I've never had them before.

Is it just plugging a 1/4" into the F/S jack, or is it something else? Is it something I can make? I'll have to look into it. I definitely need one.
You need a TRS.
The tip is boost and the ring is the loop.
They are shorted off by default from the switching jack - you need the cable to open the circuits to enable the function.
A regular TS mono cable will open the boost, but it'll short the ring to sleeve and the loop will stay off.
Here's what I use:

Any 2-button footswitch will also work.
Doesn't require LED, but it's supported.
If the button labels don't match, the amp doesn't care.

Like this? Edit: for some reason the link won't post. Is it just a headphone to 1/4" adapter?

Nah, thanks anyway, but I don't need a foot switch. I just ordered the adapter. It'll be here monday.
I have those adapters in all 3 of my Origin amps.
With the adapter or footswitch in, the push/pull boost on the gain knob function is disabled.

Some people don't like the boost, so a FS is handy for loop on, no boost.
You can also chop an old TRS cable and short the tip to ground for loop on / boost off.

Hmm, I didn't think about that. I might get back to you about that F/S I don't know. :hmmm:

So far this amp is really impressing me. Power tubes really make a difference. I tried some 6V6s but didn't really care for them, but I also tried 6CA7s and 6550s and both of those sound way better than the EL34s. I'm not sure which ones I like better. I also want to try KT77s, but the only set I have are still in my Ceriatone so I'll get to those later.

I only got this amp this afternoon and I already think it sounds fantastic for the hard rock tones I play and I'm just getting used to it. I wasn't expecting that at all. I already like it a lot better than the SC20 I had even with a V2 Hot Mod in it, if you can believe that.

It's a really fun amp so far, best 400 bucks I ever spent no joke!
