NAD Marshall DSL40CR

AC-15 ++++++++++++++++++ winner.

There's a certain (upper-mid?) "punch"/"snap" in the DSL that's a bit hard to explain but it's pretty evident when playing it. Also the top end is somewhat more "brilliant". Maybe the amp itself compresses a bit more as well...

The AC sounds warmer and more balanced to me.

Of course I've had more time to tweak the AC and have more experience playing it, and the JJ tubes in it probably are better than whatever the stock Marshall tubes are.

But still, to me the DSL sound perfectly reasonable.

Great choice! Robert has a few threads on tube changes that are worth reading. The gain gets a muddy after about 12 o’clock with the stock tube in V1. I switched to a 5751 and have a few others to try yet.

I might try a 5751 in V1 as i could live with a bit less gain on both channels. I imagine V1 is the first stage for both classic and ultra?

Any brand suggestions?

I’m certainly not a tube mfg expert, but I think I bought 2 NOS GE JAN5751 (mil-spec) ones a few years back. Not cheap though. There are many manufacturers of these. Others will know more.

If you are going to use the OD2 channel for high gain the trick is to back off the gain and boost with an OD out front.
For some reason this stops the OD2 from 'mushing' up.

As for tube swaps, the JJ ECC823 is something I am keen to try too in V1.
The 17 mu side of the dual triode is only used in the Ultra channel side of the amp (and possibly the Crunch?).
Check out the Note at the bottom of the ECC832 page at JJ. It has to be the ECC823 though. The ECC832 could make things worse!
They are hard to find in Europe though.
This is the only place I have found: JJ ECC823
They order them in as they are requested.

Here's a thread on the ECC823: ECC823 has arrived
And one for an early 40CR schematic: So, Now That The New Dsl Schematics Are Finally Out There...

@SkyMonkey
The gain on ultra 2 on my amp is at 3, amp I use the SD1 in front, and I think I am getting a great tone from my older Dsl40c’s, and I put the12AT7 in V2, and the 5751 in V 3 I think , I would have to look at my notes.
But I still love my amps.
Cheers

Done.
Not sure how long to get here in the UK.

I'll report back when it's fitted.
If you have seen or heard any of my work you would notice how face-melting metal it can do, I use both od ch but mainly od 2, I have gain at 1 o'clock and I put MXR Gt-od in front.

Everything is even slower than usual because of Corona Cerveza, I cant get hold of DVLA for 3 weeks now, hope you don't have to wait too long.

So...... The difference between the ECC83 I took out and the ECC823 I put in was that the ECC83 I took out actually worked!
They must have sent me a dud!
With the 823 installed I could maybe get the 40CR as loud as a Marshall MS-2 Micro Amp, on any channel.
Except with plenty of hiss and no gain.

Reinstalled the 83 and normal service is resumed.
I tried the 823 once more to eliminate 'seating' issues, but no-go.
Back in with the 83!

But, at least I got to do the 40CR re-bias.
It had held pretty steady in the year or so since I first biased it to 35mV.
The right was still at 35mV and the left had only drifted down to 34mV.

Now, to pen a letter of complaint. :mad:
