My Neck-Through-Body SG Finish Thread:

The pickup's cable access south of the bridge cavity looks very close to the top of the body. Is there going to be enough room for a pair of pickup cables to enter the tunnel but clear the pickups themselves??

I’ve contemplated an SG build, as well.

I really like your multi-ply, neck-thru design with the tongue-in-groove construction. That is a really good concept.

But, if I did one, I’d make a few changes to the typical Gibson design. I’d move the output jack to the side and make some changes to the control layout. I may even build it as an HSS guitar. I may also move the pickup switch to the upper bout, similar to how I did to my Jackson.

Maybe I should get an SG husk and make some mods?

Or…maybe I should just keep practicing!

LOL

It's a fun project. I like the stock Gibson control placement, but I understand how some would prefer the side jack.

We went fairly narrow on this neck. It's only 1.650", which is a big change for me. We also are using the "flatter" Jackson style profile. The neck is only 1.785" thick at the first fret and therebis no crown felt until you get up to around the 9th fret.

I'm trying to see if i could make a smaller neck more comfortable for my hands by using the super tall frets, .030" first fret action height and flatter profile.

I would say this neck is closer to a slim taper, which i have always disliked. However, after watching Zakk Wylde and his huge hands on a slim taper, i figured that i was over-complicating this neck profile thing....

We really had to rush this job as I was in the process of leaving Fender. You make a really good point. I could easily 'drop' the opening downward with a Dremel....

Today, we are making the custom, bone, compensated nut.

Nut Width: 1.650" Nut Thickness: 1.250" (Bottom of Nut is Flat) Height @ Crown Between 'D' & 'G' String Slots .340" Height @Crown between 'E' & 'A' .310" E to E String Spacing: 1.325" String-To-String Centerlines: .265" This guitar will be eventually using .052/.042/.030/.017/.013.010 strings

Current Specs!!!!

Body thickness: 1.640"

Current weight: 5.44 pounds

1st fret neck width: 1.650"

17" fret neck width: 2.200"

1st fret neck thickness: 1.765"

17th fret neck thickness: 1.865"

Now, I'm debating on the amber shellac/lacquer top coat.

Its sanded so smooth that there's practically no open grain.

I suppose i could go over it with boiled linseed oil and call it good.

But the amber shellac will give it some warmth....

Hmmmm.....
