Thought I'd share some of my journey playing guitar..... as in ... the family. The two acoustics were purchased in 1973 and 1974. The bass somewhere around 93. The electrics all since 2007.

Now.... the only guitar I'm a bit possessive and protective of is the Ovation. Came home to live with me Sept 1974.... about two months before my eventual bride was even a girl friend. For the record. Both are still here.

I've said before, CSNY was why I wanted to play guitar. Glen Campbell was why I bought an Ovation. This one's model number is 1617-4. Glen's signature model is 1627-4. Only difference that I can see in the actual guitar is, Glen's has his signature on the truss rod cover.... and probably something inside the body.

In 2007ish, decided it was time for an electric. Found a decent used G400. Over a period of a few years, I modded or swapped out everything on this guitar except the wood and the plastic.
  • Gibson 57 pups (used)
  • CTS pots - 50s wiring (new)
  • TonePros bridge and tail piece. (new - OEM Bridge was total crap)
  • GraphTech nut (new)
  • Gibson Deluxe Tuners (used - aesthetics, OEM tuners worked fine)

Took a break. Dinner. To finish up, there's the SAGA kit Tele I've mentioned before and the Hagstrom Viking. Story on the bass is in a different thread.

When I decided I "needed" a semi-hollow the assumption would be Gibson, Epiphone, Ibanez. But me being different. Me that had a grandma that was 100% Swede and born in the states, making her a first generation American. Hagstrom was it. Yes I know. Made in China now. It is what it is. I have done nothing to this guitar other than strings, clean and play it.

And lastly, said SAGA Tele. Got it cheap. It was beyond ugly as the guy that built the kit painted it orange with a paint brush. Sanded it bare. Stained and cleared it. Did some mods on it. Very few. Kept it low cost.
  • New bridge for string thru mounting.
  • Drilled holes for said strings.
  • TUSQ spring trees
  • Installed 4-way switch
  • Installed a new neck pup after I killed the original one
  • Original guy did some creative shaping on the head stock. I fixed it best I could.

Lastly, the MIM Strat that was purchased new. Saw it in Sweetwater. Liked the color. Liked it had a push button rather than a push/pull pot for bringing the bridge pup into the mix in the 4th and 5th position. And there is an obvious tonal difference in all 7 positions.
  • Pearloid pick guard. (replaced the antique white guard)
  • Graphtech string saver saddles
  • Graphtech Spring Trees (which surprise to me turned out to be rollers)
And that was all I was going to do to it. Then well after warranty I had a neck pup die. No continuity. Other two were fine. Before I could address that, the middle pot (tone) also died. So........ Used that as and excuse to update to:
  • Loller Vintage Tweed pickups
  • New CTS pots from RS Guitar Works
I had nothing against the Fender Noiseless pickups from the factory. But after I got the Loller pups installed and everything wired. First strum I was like... Okay, that's the Strat sound I've been looking for. It was a good guitar before. It's a great one now.

Brad custom made a strap for it since the color he had on the shelf just wasn't going to go with this blue.

Your gettin up into the ( Herd ) catagory now iblive. All ya need right there.
And I play them all except the 12 string. It has some issues that more or less render it unplayable and it really isn't worth the cost to repair. If I could figure that out..... and cheaply.... I'd be playing it as well.

Got one more I've been working on. Eventually, it'll be done and I'll get y'all photos.

Super nice kids there. Covers it all.
I have the noiseless in my Strat. How did tne Lollers change it?
Not sure how to describe. The Fender pups were hotter. A5 magnets. The Lollers are A2 and not as hot. I’m hearing what I consider that classic Strat chime? Also. I play pretty clean.
Like guitar vol 5 or less. Maybe these just clean up a bit better while still being articulate. And yes. I’m rambling now. Time for sleep.

I suspect then that I shall like the Noiseless better. Cheers

Most likely. If the one hadn’t died, they’d most likely still be in the guitar. But for how I play….. mostly…. I do really like the Lollars. Not that I don’t turn it up…. I do still like loud and rowdy music, just doesn’t seem to be how I mostly play. It’s a conundrum. :pound-hand:
