I got a Line 6 Spider amplifier...great little practice amp for all the sounds you need including Metallica tone.

I see your point. Maybe he was just looking for a practice amp.
Personally, I would have plugged into the Marshall half stack 50 feet away!

That would be good if you had the money. I have a Marshall TSL 2000 head without tubes and no speaker cabinet but at least I have my trusty ol' Fender Twin Reverb amp which is pretty loud in itself. Another good practice amp I would highly recommend is the VOX DA-5 battery powered amp that runs on 6 C batteries. It has some really cool tones and amp modelling with effects that are simple and easy to operate. I have 2 of them...one in black tolex and the other in white.
