More Gain From Germino Lead 55:

Seller's remorse? Lol
yes & no. Got the 1960bv cab with those Marshall Vintage & EVH 5150iii & some cash in trade. Immediately put those t75 first early runs in x pattern & the 'all things Rock" cab was born. The 5150 was good but not my thing..it caused a 7 string run which led me the Wife saying she wuld sing again if i stopped the brutality..cause it was just ugly here for a few awhile B & Drop A stuff.. at that point made a decision to part ways with the super heavies at this age..wife decides to sing..many fenders show up..fits her voice..back to standard tuning. & seek out many fenders cause of voice pairing.like the singing..hate the music cause inside, its the Rock show playing live..always was about the energy. Probably better music being made during this period but a big void as a musician & song writer. She can't sing anymore..seriously almost quit. then

Found my old DSL100 that has been modded all up & paired with DSL50 went & did My Wall 1& 2, Mesa's show up..there was the inspiration that fit exactly what was in my head...heavy but not like i was ding before.. started UP band & now have no clue..learned to pair Marshall-Orange-Mesa in a mix & just let it rip. maybe never to play live again but sure can make a full song a week until the Reaper comes calling & takes me out

Ive never gotten to play thru an orange cabinet myself but ive heard them paired with Marshalls and they sounded great. I got the Amplitube software and have played around with different Orange licensed sound clips and Marshalls and that by itself, sounded cool. Very heavy but nothing like the real thing obviously lol

Cool,,, very cool SG John. I really like the old Manx Nortons too. Cheers
What about the Norton Commando . This is a newer model, but i am referring to the older ones.

My first bike was a ‘73 850 Commando. Would love to own another Norton.

The Manx Norton has always been one of my “dream bikes.” Would love to own one. It was such a thrill to stand on the balcony of the pub at Creg-Ny-Baa during the Manx GP watching the Manx Nortons blast by us at 100 mph.

Nice "first bike". Would have been a great experience watching the Manx Nortons on the track. They are such great looking machines16097219339637265721837868739604.jpg
This second pic is the M30 that Derek Minter campaigned. 16096278708404003528158637864838.jpg
Note the air scoop he's added to the front hub in an attempt to cool the 4 leading shoe front brake.
The popularity of these bikes is such that new replica's are still made by companies like Molnar (who hold the Manx Norton rights), Summerfield & Race Works. McIntosh is a well regarded builder (uses Summerfield motor/transmission). It's even possible to get "road" versions featuring a properly adapted kick starter & alternator/lighting, built by Steve Tonkin (Molnar bikes). Cheers

No Adrian, you want one of these.

500cc worth of one of the scariest rides you'll ever meet.

I want one really bad, even if I will look like a circus bear on a bicycle on it due to my stature.

This Germino has to be the least gainy amp that I've ever played. No tube made a significant difference.

He ended up selling it and using the DSL40C I gave him.

Exactly!!!!

That's why the bandleader sold it.
Over the years, having never actually played amps like an actual old Plexi or even a stock 2203/2204; I was shocked to learn how little gain they actually have despite seeing tons of famous hard rock and metal bands use them extensively.

What I came to find out though, was like @syscokid said and that was most either modded the hell out of them or ramped up overdrives, distortion, treble boosters and even fuzz pedals in front of them. Even the initial JCM800 series 2203/2204s are kinda lighter on the gain when compared to the 2205/2210 split channels and Jubilees ( there's that diode clipping debate once more!) I think thats why the JCM900s, JCM2000/DSLs went way further in terms of gain too to be honest. The only two factory 2203s I ever heard that had a massive amount of gain were the 2203ZW Zakk Wylde and the 2203KK Kerry King, but both used different power tubes and internal tweaks and boosting features ( 6550 for the Zakk Wylde and KT88s for the Kerry King)

On their own though, i do still really love the classic Marshall crunch of both the Plexis and 2203/2204s. Its iconic classic rock and dirty sounding.

The big deal with the mid 70's introduction of the 2203 & 2202 is that cascading channel circuit that IMO, propelled Marshall into high gain territory following the Mesa Boogie's lead and their cascading channel circuits that started a few years earlier.

Also IMO, the old JTM's and pre 2203 JMP's have a more muscular tone than the Marshall's with higher gain circuits. Doesn't make one better than the other... just different flavors and preferences!

The JTMs, Plexis, and JMPs also have a great singing sustain, and tube saturation that is missing from high gain amps. You just need to turn them up to get there. High gain amps are good at what they do, but are limited in the opposite way. You can clean up a Plexi quite nicely to fit many genres of music. You can't do that with a high gain amp, unless it has multiple channels. Again, one man's junk is another's Twinkie. Even though my DST Solera has a Soldano SLO50 side to the amp, I keep it in the Hiwatt side because it has much more open headroom and a sweeter sustain, as the SLO side compresses way too much for me.

Neat kit...

My question was could a SS plug-in rectifier be used to get him some more gain???

He 'marvels' at my Origin 50's gain production - and I tell him - it's not gain, it's volume....
Is there a schematic for germino lead 55?
Could probably do some boosting...

But it's increasing sensitivity that you want.
It's not gain that is the issue.
