I think sadly it was largely due to crowds still being hung up on the Mk IIC and MkIIC+ especially and didn't want change. The MkIII was actually more versatile with 3 channels with 85w to 25w Simulclass switching vs the previous 75w to 15w. Most of the features from the MkIIs carried over to the MkIIIs as well, though on the Green Stripe, they did reduce the overall gain some but the Black and Red Stripes were nearly the same. Mesa kinda kicked it to the wayside too to usher in the MkIV unfortunately

Just a victim of circumstances I suppose

Amazing how a few tweaks made a huge difference. Marshall changed the history of rock n roll.

Shoot, I am happy playing through my HX Stomp it has 70 amp models that are very good. Their plexi and Friedman sounds good. Of course it does not move air with headphones or studio monitor but when I hook it to the flat response cabinet it does.

Fact is, when I went after my first half stack, I was debating a few choices. The first one that came to mind was a Peavey 5150 because EVH made them look awesome and my uncle had scored one that I loved. But he also had a Mesa Boogie MkIII and I loved that too, but didn't have the cash saved up for that territory. Had been busting ass doing odd jobs and helping my dad do house rewires ( child labor!) and was determined to get a big amp.

It was my dad who said " Look, if you're gonna spend all your money on an amp, how the hell are you gonna do better than a Marshall? It's THE amp, man". As we were talking, the video for Oasis " D'ya Know What I Mean?" came on MTV and there was a wall of Marshalls. Oasis definitely isn't metal, obviously lol, but it was almost perfect timing and a sign.

So, we went to the store that afternoon and I bought my first Marshall. Sadly, it was a nice 4500 Dual Reverb but the store had to order the 1960A cab, so in the meantime they loaned me this AWFUL used 4x12 Marshall Lead Cab with 35w G12Ls ( believe it was the first Valvestate cab) that didn't even fit the head and it sounded horrible. I ended up returning the amp after a month when the 1960A never arrived and took the money to another store and bought a 2500 SLX with the 1960A Cab.

Been an addict ever since lol
On a side note, I ended up with my uncle's 5150 anyways for about $350. Tolex was tore to hell by the time he sold it to me, but the amp was was in perfect working order. He had decided to stick with the Mesa Boogie and didnt like it. I ended up selling it to a "friend" of mine for $250 after having it for maybe 2 months, on the condition he keep it but sell it back to me if he didn't like it. He gave me a sob story of wishing he had a good amp but didnt have any money, so I took a loss on it. He ended up losing it in pawn just a few months later and never told me until I asked about it one day. So, @#$% him for that one.

I had a similar experience in the mid eighties. I wanted a Marshall, but couldn't afford one. My only amp at the time was my Ampeg Gemini II. I went through a few amps that were "supposed to sound exactly like a Marshall." Some Randalls and other stuff. Spent more money in the long run. In '89 when the JTM45 reissue was released, I scraped together everything I could and bought one. It's still one of my best amps. Every JTM45 shoot out I've seen uses an original, an '89 Reissue, and several clones. The '89 always wins for being most authentic to the original. I'm still happy with that purchase 33+ years later.

Oh I getcha loud and clear! Definitely " Hell Bent For Leather" :cool:

Yeah it's the Mode Four and yep, a few years ago you could literally buy one cheaper than a Squier Strat lol about $250-400 at the very most. They're around $750 these days which makes me kick myself in the ass for jumping the gun too soon and buying a full stack when it was released, completely overpaying. It's an awesome amp though, extremely loud and pretty versatile for a SS Marshall ( well, technically a hybrid or aka just a Valvestate on Steroids).

My only real regret is what I didn't buy when I bought this. I had some money saved up and got to test this fullstack and a JCM800 2203 Zakk Wylde half stack. They were nearly the same price but I liked the Mode Four's sound for some reason at the time and went with it. Now, the 2203 ZW half stack goes for $6500 as they only had made 600 of them. I definitely chose the wrong one in terms of which held its value lol

Live and learn. But I do like the amp still

In terms of pricing, the Mesa stuff is ludicrously priced in Canada.
Peavey? Better price wise but ZERO, and I mean sero, support. Cannot even get parts. No one wants to handle it.
So...
Marshall isn't all that ridiculous price wise. The DSL ones are less than locally made Traynors.
I spose if one was on more of a budget it would make more difference.

So Peavey won't help out you guys up North? Wonder why the hell that is? I mean they're large but not massive by any means and being in the US, they shouldn't be able to cite international issues when dealing in Canada. It's not like they're shipping them across the Atlantic

That's the important thing the tone in your opinion. I have owned a diverse selection of Marshall's.
4102 DR, DSL 40c, JTM30,2205 I think it was 50w? I forget. Lol On and On. Good tones but not JCM 800's. I had a opportunity to buy a old JMP $900. It had been modded and forum genius's said no don't buy it there are plenty un-molested ones. Bad call. I didn't no better then but they were way wrong.

Last year the once local PV dealer said they would get parts from PV USA.
Once a year.
Annually.
Really? Terrible so they stopped being a dealer. Now, if a Canadian distributor for PV could get parts they would have gone that route.
So i totally steer clear.
