Marshall Style 1987 Build, Which Choke?

The 50 watt has taken the throne seat on the stack. I’m really liking this amp. It sounds very open and natural. Maybe what you would call organic.

Are you running the amp through both cabs?
I prefer to run my '68 JMP clone through a (greenback loaded) B cab. Through both an A & B it seems to lose some of the "grind" when pushing it (that I like it for).
I've only listened to the first clip so far, but it is sounding very good. I'd like to hear it with the guitar straight in, no FX in the signal chain & the bright channel volume stoked up around 6 ~ 8 (normal channel to taste). These amps really come alive & start to roar when opened up some, yet still respond well to picking dynamics etc.
Hope you enjoy your '68 spec as much as I do mine. Cheers

That's both cabs Ivan. A cab has 4 Greenbacks and the B cab has Greenbacks on top with Vintage 30's on the bottom. I'll have to take it to the cabin and play it through my 212 to open it up. Maybe next weekend. I'll have to wear earplugs. This thing is effing loud and the pick dynamics are wicked. You really need to pay attention to how aggressive you are.

Well, it's not the the old 1987 circuitry, but figured I would throw my DSL40's hat into the ring. Schecter through DSL40C with ECC823/5751/7025-WA/5751 Tube Combo miked from 3 feet away with SM57. Speaker is a Electro-Harmonix 12VR75. Amp volume 3/4 up with FV30L pedal in the FX loop to control volume level.

That amp sounds so fantastic.
Marshall’s best, and I love your tone coming through it.
The nay sayers can climb another rock to crow , when you get your Kemper be sure to profile this tone
Cheers

Love the super tight 'n crispy, and midrangey tone your getting out of your rig!

I'll be totally honest with you about speakers....and this is just my personal experience.

The 12" WGS reaper 55Hz absolutely CANNOT handle the bass frequencies with the same clarity as the Jensen Jet Tornado neodymium 12" can. It should, because it's built with a bass cone, but the Reaper 55Hz goes 'farty' if you hammer it, but this Jensen soaks up the punishment and stays bright and clear. even on palm-muted F#'s at almost full volume.

I hammered a Celestion G12H with the same settings that I hammered my Jensen with and I though I was going to blow the voice coil out of it. It sounded like slapping the inside of the cabinet with a wet wash rag.

The Electro-Harmonix 12VR75 is probably the better of these speakers for dealing with a lot of amplified bass frequencies in the signal, but I also found the limitations of that speaker too. I just couldn't set my amp where I really "loved" the response. I had to compromise on bass and resonance to keep it from farting.

The WGS Veteran 30 and ET90 both sounded like they had been blown out when I tested them through this rig. Same with the British Lead. They sounded muffled and distorted when I started hitting them with the same settings, and these were new speakers, not Ebay used items.

The Jensen seems to have a little bias towards the bright edge of the spectrum, and as such, I am able to really drive the mids and bass/resonance. Our singer (who is not a musician at all) commented last Monday night on how she could feel my amp "pushing air" when I was playing the chunky, palm-muted passages to "Joey" by Concrete Blond.

Only the 1984 Jackson 4x12 200 Watt Jackson by Eminence cabinet (shown in the image posted below) can take the punishment of my rig without farting itself into oblivion. I have tried Marshall cabs with Greenbacks and Creambacks, Peavey cabinets, and even Randall's, and all sounded like they were being blown to Hell. I finally gave up and neutered my amp, until I found the Electro-Harmonix 12VR75, which was a huge improvement...but the angels never really started to sing until i found this Jensen Tornado.

The only drawback to the Jackson is size and weight.

So, with all due respect to the revered and hallowed speakers of lore, I cannot use them and believe me, I have tried them, selling them at a huge loss on Reverb.

This is a huge component of my tone:

I have kinda evolved into that tone out of necessity. I didn't used to play with so much mid-range, but our bassist at the time played with a really bright, midrangey bass tone, and I found myself scooping the mids to blend in with him. Now, we have a "Boomy Bassist" and I have to boost the mids to avoid "competing' with him for the same frequency in the spectrum.

If you note EQ#1 (right) that's on all the time and is part of that tone, even though the amp settings are kinda bass-heavy, the mid EQ really cuts and gives it that speaker-moving tone. You can feel air coming off my grillcloth. The speaker is getting the poop beat out of it.

EQ #2 (left) is "flat-lined" basically, so that when it is kicked in, it gives a 10-15db signal boost without altering the tone. Since EQ #2 is in the FX loop, the added boost doesn't add to the gain structure, it just boosts the signal and I don't have feedback issues, since I am already pushing the "Lead 2" channel with a TS-9

My noise gate threshold is full-up, to help keep the rig under control on small stages (I literally have to watch my headstock at some venues to keep from jousting with our #2 guitarist's Les Paul) and you ca hear it cutting-in rapidly in the audio clip I posted above.

I am scared to try an amp build like what you guys are posting!!!!

Is Digi-Verb possible???
Does somebody make one designed for cab installation?

Alright Ivan, this is about 6.5 on channel 1, no channel 2. Straight in from the SG through my 212 with Greenbacks. I've been using rachets all afternoon (screwing with the damn TV antenna), no warm up and no intended idea what to play. Plus, the SG is still aclimating to 90 percent humidity from AC, so not in tune.
