Les Paul owners check this out

Hey. I learned some stuff in this thread. Thanks guys.

I don't break strings too often. But I'll say that every time I stray away from Ernie balls.... I break then and always go right back. Even the expensive ones seem to break on me. Both ends, usually bridge though.

I rotate through 7 or 8 guitars, so I don't change strings too often. Once I hear them start to get dull or feel them wearing I'll swap in a new set.

While we're at it boys, what is your take on top wrapping?
I've done it to a few and i feel inconclusive

I do it on my G400. And pretty much the only reason is because in my feeble mind I’ve convinced myself the guitar is happier with the end piece screwed down tight to the body. When I do that and string it normal, I have strings making contact with the bridge before they go over the saddles. Yes. I could raise the end piece a couple turns and fix that. I don’t want to. So I top wrap.

Now. Play better? Sustain better? Bend better? I have no clue.

That is exactly what I do. In my brain it will resonate with the body much better screwed down tight to the face than thru the posts.
In theory it should feel a little softer thru bends and whatnot. I'm not sure I feel that or not, but I also play fat strings, drop tuned so I'm sure that may negate some of the general feeling that people talk about.

The Hollow-Post Tuners are my all-time favorite design and i prefer the tulip-shaped and lightweight "green keys" over the heavier Grovers, especially on an SG style, like this scratch built, neck-through SG replica.

Tried top wrapping for a little while and didn't like it, because of the way it felt under my palm. Kind of didn't like the way it looked either.
As far as the tailpiece being all the way down, if there is any difference at all in either tone or sustain I am too much of a hack to tell - in all honesty the guitars seem snappier to me with it raised upl.

I don't like the look or feel (under my palm) but i love the feel on the fretboard.

Over the years, I have had 5-6 USA Les Pauls (one was a JR) never could bond with any of them. Don't get me wrong, I love their sound when other folks play em and they are iconic and cool. They just lack the immediacy/pop/attack of a good bolt on for me and I can't play em "correctly" for lack of a better word.

I generally use the Dunlop max grips in .88 sometimes carbon jazz III

I adjust mine in front of a 120db Marshall ha ha you can "feel" the volume differences.
Lol I think the loudest I got up to was 118.5db, measured. That was with the Mode Four cranked into a single MF400B cab. Supposedly they can go further but that was my readings and it was devastating.

Side note, when I got the amp, I actually bought two of those cabs and ran it in a full stack setup. The dealer sold me them but the amp IS NOT set up for two of those cabs because of an impedance deficiency ( you have to have the MF280 cabs for that). Well, blew the first amp up 15 mins after bringing it home. Took it back, they gave me another and I blew THAT one up after 3 months. Marshall actually repaired it for me, not knowing what I was doing and neither did I really lol but they modded it to accept the cabs and I ran it full stack for a long time after with no issues.

Anywho, cranked it with the solo boost all the way up once I got it back. Actually knocked the vinyl siding loose on the house that was firmly attached, where the amp was against the wall. Never measured dB but I imagine it was far worse than 118.5 lol
