Gentlemen; if I had my choice between purchasing a 360 or a 370, (and I know this is a subjective question,) but for those out there who own working models of
both which model is preferred and why? I've owned both, but it was long ago and in a galaxy far away; and the only thing that I'm remembering is the
sound , with my Ric, that I got from the 370, and how incredibly loud it was. The 360 worked fine for the 4 yrs. that I owned it, but didn't have the
definition of sound that the 370 had due to, I believe, the graphic eq! The possibility of more mid-presence, I seemed to favor! Back when, that is! The last
time either was in my possession was 1976! So update me, set me straight. So I can hope to make an informed purchace when/if the opportunity arises! And we
thank you!

72jazz, since the 360 is just a preamp, I'll assume you're asking about comparing the full 361 stack (360 preamp + 361PP powered 18 cabinet) against
the full 371 stack (370 amp + 301 unpowered 18 cabinet).

I've seen a lot of people say here that the 371 doesn't sound as good as the 361, that the 360 electronics are warmer and the 361PP cabinet sounds
better than the 301. It's been years ago, but like you I've owned both and I say... "it depends".

My recollections are similar to yours... I was into that super clear midrange punch a la Gary Thain of Uriah Heep... The 371 definitely had that to a greater
degree than the 361. I did love the sound of the 361 too... I'll never forget the first time I heard Humble Pie - Greg Ridley had FOUR of them, and it was
chest-pounding & bone shaking - a perfect amp for his foam-damped nylon strings.

I loved both, but when you say mid-presence and sharp clarity, to me you're talking about the main strength of the 371.

In my humble opinion, they are separate beasts, both capeable of holding their own against any guitar amps. The best examples of the 361 tone come form John
Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and the late Jaco Pastorius. However, when I saw Zeppelin live in Atlanta in the mid 70's, Jones used 2 double cabinet
371's. Listen to the first (2) Zeppelin albums for the 361 tone and their Presence album....the song "The houses of the Holy' for the 371 sound.
Watch " The Song Remains the Same" for his classic 361 tone.

I don't believe that you can find Jaco's tone with a 370. While the 361 seems louder than a 371, the secret to the 361 is the varitone knob, which I
believe to be a semi-parametric tone shaper. The graphic EQ on the 370 provides a great variety of tones. If you enjoy the prog rock sound, use a 370, with
the bright switch on, with any bass strung with Rotosound Strings....better yet....a Rick with a pick. The 370 can be used with any cabinet configuration,
whereas the 361 is it's own entity with powered cabinets. Both employ a folded horn cabinet with an 18" speaker. Again the 370 can power any
cabinet.

You can't go wrong with either choice, however the 370 is no longer made. Acoustic U.S.A will release a new 361 soon enough ...RFZ.
