With relicing, Its kinda like fake boobs. I kinda like them but, they're not really the real deal.
I dont know.
Where a woman had to have a mastectomy and the fakes are legit reconstructive surgery, I'm 100% in support of that.

To each his own.
Myself, a naturally worn used guitar, or a signature / copy of a particular guitar relic'd to that specific guitar is ok if thats what a customer wants.
But relicing in itself seems super phony to me (and usually overdone / excessive / trying too hard); a poser trying to buy false street cred.
I dont consider sanding the back of a neck to cut the shiny /sticky out, or cutting belly relief relicing but mods to the player's preference.

Back to the point - if Gibson says in the sales lit the thin finish is expected to wear in like pre-washed denim to get that look sooner - ok.
But if not, then it is cost cutting to the point of inferior finishing and an inferior product.

I am very careful with my gear, and still cringe at first if I bump one of mine on something or make a scratch while working on them. They get played regularly; its part of the natural process. I get over it quickly.

OR is it a legitimate GRIPE about a beloved product?????

YES -- Im BITCHING about GIBSON again .... my BELOVED 2014 LPJ has begun to show wear (to be fair Ive had it only a couple months) on the edge where my forearm rubs as I play
(apparently the P.O. never played it --- or played without TOUCHING the body (??) -- its almost impossible to photograph because its RIGHT on the edge so the flash and light make it hard to capture ....
its this guitar

I ahve played the SNOT out of these ---for years....... not wearing at the edges........

anyone else experience this with a Gibbo?

anyone want to explain why I should not be a bit disappointed in Gibson for this ??

I love the guitar the play, the tone, the comfort... all stellar all make me smile ---

but -- here we are again ---WTF GIBSON ...... why is a 37 year old PEAVEY capable of HOLDING its finish and the Gibbo cant???
Dump that thing and buy a decent axe.

Different finishes work differently. Nitro vs poly, satin vs gloss...
I have poly finish guitars from mid 90s with essentially no wear in that spot.
Also nitro finishes with dull spots there. Just how it is.
Ditch it and get a poly finish guitar.

Yup, no matter how authentic they look, take one squeeze and you can tell they are fake! and that can throw a fella off :)
With the relic guitars no matter how well they try to mimic age, it's always a factory "fake" look because you can't authenticate real wear and tear. I was in the decorative coatings industry for a couple decades, we had to make new stuff look old all the time but it was always "pretty" old there was a threshold you couldn't cross or it ended up looking like $#!^ and high end buyers were not into that, they like the idea of vintage but not the actual old dresser thats hanging out in grandmas attic, (most the time) depending on it's condition then yea they would go for grandmas dresser and pay high $ for it as well...
So we are down to (FAKE BOOBS & FAKE GUITARS VS REAL BAGOOZA'S $ REAL RELIC GUITARS) it's a no brainer who wins that debate :flash:

I realize this type bass was played by Jack Bruce.
If it was good enough for Mr. Bruce, it should work OK.

well Ima gonna go ya'll one step further
19 FOOGIN 62 thats '62 folks the damn VIETNAM WAR was STILL RAGING!!! (for a little scope here) gas was .31 a gallon and many of us HERE ....werent yet !!! but this damn BASS was ......

its had a headstock repair -- its had the frets ripped out and converted to fretless and the bridge area and "P" pickup area routed/hacked/ and ripped into ---

it is blued screwed glued and tattooed ------- beat, chunked, damaged repaired war warn and ugly ...............

and yet even though the finish is "checked" beyond belief ---- the EDGE of the body finish is still INTACT and NOT as rubbed off as the edge of a 2014 otherwise PRISTINE Gibson --- so --- this labors the question of WHY isnt GIBBO building em as good as they used to ?????? while banking on the PROMISE of YOU the buyer getting The "HERITAGE" of a quality GIBSON

for the record the SG EB "P" sounds A-FRIGGIN -MAZING it goes THUD like few other bass guitars can ...... of any year and price point......and cost me a WHOPPING(hold your hats kids) ....... 300.00 ......yep...... original tuners and all.......... 3 bills

COME ON GIBSON stop building price point and make a good guitar AFFORDABLE guitar and be PROUD while ... PLAY AUTHENTIC!

I like it better when it has the finish crack / check marks.
I like the oldness of it.
To me, that old bass is a thing of beauty.

but....I like it -- outside of the finish it plays and sounds better than any standard Gibbo Lester Ive played in years.
