IM SO CONFUSED

I love el84's, the 5 i have are all major dif to me

Orange TH30 & OR15
Jet City 20HV & 22h
Mesa T/A

all the circuits are completely dif & do exactly what i wanted them to tone wise in a mix. The speakers paired with them have a huge impact in final tone(along with pickup choice)

Have you ever seen the Peavey 6505 Piranha 20w @eSGEe ? Its technically a hybrid because its SS power and a single 12Ax7 ( think Valvestate) but its definitely got the Peavey high gain. Its a lunchbox from hell and its $180 new so the used market is even cheaper ( about $110 on reverb)

Then i retract my previous statement entirely, i apologize lol

Blackstar has the HT1RH MKII 1watt thats pretty cool. New about $270 but used, around $200, even cheaper in the original model used

An easier alternative is to change your tubes to something radically different ( biasing is essential and sometimes small mods are necessary of course)! For example: EL34s can be easily swapped to 6AC7 ( a darker American Version of the British EL34), KT 66 ( more bottom end and woodier tone) Kt77 ( like a 6AC7 but more cleaner highs) and its even possible to go to a lil more extreme to 6L6 ( classic american amp tone like Fender, Mesa or Peavey) or the 5881 ( britains answer to the 6L6 but crunchier and more rugged).

Radical changes can be done like going to the massive 6550 or KT88 ( usually both require modding) but they open up more headroom by taking more to push them to breakup.

As far as preamp gain goes? Lots of possibilities without biasing or modding really. For example gain can be increased by using higher gain 12Ax7s or reduced by using tubes with less draw like a 5751, 12AT7 or one of my favorites, a 12Au7.

6CA7 not 6AC7
and there are certain amps, like traynor which cannot use 6CA7 in place of EL34s.
Including PV Windsor.
Watch out for that.

But yes there is something different, just not for bass.

Bass would be better with a rack mount tube preamp,
A McIntosh stereo power amp,
an electronic crossover with 2X 10 and 2X 15 inch speakers.

How come Traynor doesnt accept the 6CA7?( thanks for clearing up the typo by the way, 6AC7 is a completely different old tube never really used much in guitar amps past the 50s and common at that lol). I always thought that they were basically reasonably compatible. Is it because its not a true Pentode and actually a beam tetrode?
