I need to replace my front door and it confuses me...

ive been known to throw tools-- (while weaving new and exciting expletive's the world isnt prepared for)----or parts--- THROUGH dry wall........thank heaven for DECALS and POSTERS .........wonder if the new home owner ever went to repaint and found the holes...........or better yet the screwdriver..........socket wrench........pliers...............etc. etc.

Been there done that. Stuck a set of keys in the wall when I got my car stuck in my own driveway. I used to toss tools..... but I got tired of having to walk across the garage and try and find it under the work bench. I’ve gotten much better at that, just took until I was an adult.... like 2-3 years ago.

Home improvement stuff frustrates me...I have no experience with these things.

However, I fixed a toilet on Sunday. A root system, from a recently removed Bush, had woven itself up between pipe and slab, went through the wax ring and entered the pipe.

The aroma is hard to describe...but, the toilet is all sealed and bolted down and will flush with only a nudge of the handle...:-)

I should add as explanation on the key in wall story. We were in the middle of one of the snowiest winters on record in western Illinois. This may have been the third major snow in two weeks. I lived two miles from work and had already been stuck twice and had to be pulled out of drift by a friend... before I ever got home. And the 2nd time was only a couple blocks from home. Third time was not a charm.

WOW Robert, I was just telling my buddy yesterday about the time I was pulling a toilet for a buddy and had to undo or work on the drain pipe from under the floor in the crawl space. The yuckage happened as I separated the pipe above me and the water inside went all over my face and mouth.

THOSE pics of yours should go into the Horror Film Hall of Fame right next to my memory of the Exorcist movie in my memory banks.

Mitch, what did you mean to Cadorman about the extension jamb on the non hinge side.

Did you mean add the extension jamb on the OUTER side not the inner ( room side) of the frame? HAHA I was picturing you telling him to only extend the Strike side and not the head or hinge side.

What I was trying to relay is for him to set the jamb (hinges in ) and fur the outside of the jamb, so the door would operate correctly lol

Cador, they also make Aluminum extension sills/thresholds for the bottom so it covers the whole area you step on. Make sure to put beads of Silicone on the sill framing going corner to corner like little humps of a dam,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and in the corners and a few inches up each side.

Also verify the sill is level before installing the door and have lots of shims to adjust things just so. The leveling is critical to lining up your latch with the strike, dead bolt to the strike holes etc. Keep about a 3/16 uniform gap all 3 sides of the door too with the shims. Also once door is hung, and fitted 100%, Put spray foam ( minimal expanding doors and windows) in the gap.

Mitch, Something tells me you';d be like me hanging doors.
Kinda like breathing if everything is plumb, level and square with a uniform width jamb. Not Skewed or wider from top to bottom etc.

Get it prepped, checked for level and measurements, Test fit door, have 2 guys to make easier. If all looks good on test fit, get the silicone, shims and fasteners ready. Install and adjust door get all adjusted and install lock sets........... insulate, trim and good to go.

Yes and when things are not right, in the existing opening fix it first to the best you can and shim the rest.
Cheers

Worst part about a doorway that is not right. HOW the heck hard is it to make a door R.O. RIGHT? AS in Big enough to get the door in, plumb so it hangs straight and closes right, and square, so it makes the door installer not curse the jerk who came before him.

Bastard is installed. I just need to go get some 2x6 Cedar for the outside trim. It sits on a cement slab butted up to tile. Everything was level, so it went very smooth. I was able to steal the sill extension from the old door and it slid right on beautifully. Since I didn't have the outside trim yet I reinstalled the inside trim and did the spray foam from the outside. I will trim it up once it is dry.

Nice work, glad you got it sorted!
Your feline buddies must be very impressed as well.

That spray foam can be tricky to trim when it hardens up.
For me, things start out well enough but then there is bleeding and a lot of swearing.
But then again, most of my projects go that way so....
Rock On!

Nice work Robert!!
There is no harmony in home with a sketchy toilet.

Plumbing always me poop twices.
I hate plumbing, except for running pipe, and sweating copper pipe.
because I like, wait for it......... SOLDERING!

How tight is your gap on the knob side on the inner jamb, Cador?

It looks a little snug as it goes down toward the floor. I might be inclined to suck it in to the framing a bit more up and down that side so if humidity hits in the summer time, your door or wood doesn't swell and not shut. Ideally I would look for a gap 1/2 as wide as I see across the top of the door and the frame.
