Basswood, 1/16" thick. Found it at the local hardware store. Comes in 2' x 3" strips for hobby/craft projects.

I wanted the material to be thin and soft enough to cut thru with an x-acto knife. I had to go slow and cut the inside opening first. The ring is very fragile. Hopefully the primer and enamel paint strengthen it a bit, ha ha!

I like the use of the rubber bands; new to me.
I will incorporate that into my methodology.
 
If I had the skills (and tools!), I would fabricate the whole cover out of a block of wood. The outside perimeter of the cover would have to be a perfect match for the cavity. Not only is the Dogear cavity routed out longer than a soapbar cavity, but it's also narrower.

I'm assuming that these were made with one of dem cad-cam thingies:

Yes, on the friction. The wooden ring is snug. It's so snug that I'm afraid it might crack if it shrinks from drier humidity conditions.

The rubber band thing works really well!

Sysco, that’s the company I bought the Purple Heart P90 covers for my Purple Wurl project. He also made the PH 3 way switch knob (not cheap). I have also bought different hard wood pup rings from him. He does nice work.

Fabrication Part II...

My feeble attempt at a wooden P90 cover:

I really suck at precision needed for this type of fab. I could not drill all the holes straight enough, and I had to oversize the pole holes to compensate for the misalignment. Maybe a drill press would have helped, but I don't have one. Plus I need to create a precise template to route out the inside of the mahogany cover more efficiently. The Tru-Oil finish on this one is a bit too shiny, and with the camera's flash, it makes the color of the pup brighter than it actually is. I like to try this again if I can figure out how to drill those holes straight.... Tips anyone????????????
