Be careful with what you wish for! Those pointy horns can do some damage...REALLY WIISH i COULD RUB MY JUNK ON THAT sg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basswood, 1/16" thick. Found it at the local hardware store. Comes in 2' x 3" strips for hobby/craft projects.Very nice, Sysco.
What is the ring made of?
I’m guessing steel or aluminum?
Those darn dog ears mess things up again! So this is the story, and I'm sticking to it...
Remember my PGK SG junior built from a kit? The pickup cavity was properly routed for a dogear P90. I shoved a soapbar P90 in there, instead. I F'n assumed that the cavities for all P90s were all the same. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You can see in the following pic what I'm describing.
Yes, but the stealthy(adjustable) Cat Ear P-90 pounces in to action to remedy the situation! Those darn dog ears mess things up again!

Seriously...back at you sir! After looking at it a couple of times now, I really see an elegant solution at play here.

Yes, on the friction. The wooden ring is snug. It's so snug that I'm afraid it might crack if it shrinks from drier humidity conditions. How is it held on - friction against the pickup cover?
I like the use of the rubber bands; new to me.
I will incorporate that into my methodology.
If I had the skills (and tools!), I would fabricate the whole cover out of a block of wood. The outside perimeter of the cover would have to be a perfect match for the cavity. Not only is the Dogear cavity routed out longer than a soapbar cavity, but it's also narrower.
I'm assuming that these were made with one of dem cad-cam thingies:
