Hurricane Milton

In a hurricane it's better to tie the doors open.
This prevents the building from exploding because of the difference in air pressure between outside and inside.
Well I been through one hurricane and that was enough.

Where is he at? I forget who's who from back when they used to post here. I know there were a couple of guys in Lakeland/Plant city area. My family is all in Tampa. Some have left and are on their way to Jacksonville, but most are planning to stay. I've been thru a lot of hurricanes in my day and I never considered evacuating, but if I was still down there for this one I don't think I'd be sticking around for it.

Lakeland.

A worst case scenario may happen in Tampa bay. They have not had a direct hit since 1921.

With respect, the Mythbusters definitively busted that one.

Right now they are recommending evacuation for zone A and B in Tampa. My Brothers house is in zone C, but a couple of houses down the same road is zone B. This is NOT good. I'm worried...
My friend in Sarasota lives far enough inland, surge isn’t an issue. Wind however. She lives in one of those trailer parks. And I hate to refer to them as double wides because there isn’t one of them that hasn’t been remodeled or added onto and if it weren’t for the roof line…. You might not know what it is under the skin….. But due to the nature of the structures. They’re pretty much an automatic mandatory evac.

Myth busters is full of it.
They have been wrong about many many things.
These people are Hollywood special effects technicians; they do not dwell in reality.

Equalizing pressure between inside and outside will prevent the building from exploding.
Same in a tornado.
Closing / sealing the doors and windows is the worst possible thing you could do.

Meanwhile
this approaching storm is quite nasty serious and everyone is advised to get the hell out of the way.

I didn't see that one, but I don't get my information from Mythbusters anyway. What I know comes from growing up in hurricane alley. I've been thru many, many hurricanes. Back when I was kid growing up in Florida we didn't even know they were hurricanes. They didn't have the radars like they do now. All we knew was it rained for days and the wind was blowing way more than usual.

Very scary stuff..

Rapid intensification of storms has become the norm in recent years. This is prompting some scientists to question whether another classification – Category 6 – should be introduced for the most intense hurricanes that are becoming more frequent due to the climate cri

Don't like what i am seeing or hearing on the news. I hope safety for all Floridians, and other States that have this storm coming their way. Safety to all the Brothers and Sisters that are members here, that live in the areas of this horrific storm that's coming..
Let's just be thankful they are all getting all the help they can possibly get with well funded and responsibly kept reserves. ;) /s

Mythbusters was a show that consulted actual scientists including for the hurricane test. Let's say they were wrong.

The pressure differential will not blow up a house. Unless you have a completely airtight house (impossible), the pressure will slowly equalize as a storm approaches.

Yes, the eye of a hurricane has low pressure, but the wide area around the storm is also low.

The current pressure in Milton's eye is 972 millibars. 1000 is ambient pressure at sea level. SW FL is at 1006.

The pressure differential is 34 millibars: Convert Millibar to Psi

IF the eye were to immediately move to SW FL, the pressure differential would be .5 psi, far from able to blow up a building.

Well, my brother finally decided to get out. He (and the dog) drove up to Jacksonville today so now they are all safe. My sister in law, their disabled son and my Mom drove up yesterday and he was going to stay and ride it out. I'm glad he got smart and left. Now we're all just praying the new house they had build and just moved into in April survives. None of the rest of my family are in an evacuation zone.
