How Much Does String Gauge Affect Tone?

When Jeff Beck starts a tour he is on .008". By the time he is on the last date he might be up at .013". It's nothing to do with sound, just how strong his fingers get with constant playing.

With me it how tired my fingers get over the years. I know that there is no way I could play for 2 hours with number ten strings now. The bass E string on my electric guitars are 38s and on my acoustic it is 54 and I don't play it very much.

I notice a tone difference in everything...or in nothing...or in one thing or the other...

...and Stevie was a fantastic dresser! I hate to some dick on stage in sweats or cargo shorts...no respect.

The mental or psychological aspect should be looked at. If only one person you take seriously and have respect for, you will believe that your tone is bad because of a ugly strap. No really it was a terrible strap and it didn't match my skin tone either.

And yet SRV said he couldn't get his sound with anything less than .011's

Maybe, but I'd put The Reverends tone up against his any freaking day.

The only difference I think string gauge makes is in the player - different feel different tone. Thats it. Why make it harder on yourself than necessary if it's plugged into an amp anyway, particularly for those among us that use fair amounts of drive.

"Why you wanna work so hard, man?"
Didn't BB King say that to someone who used heavy strings? Clapton maybe?

Could be. It's hard to argue with Gibbon's sound.
