How many retirees do we have here on TTR

Lol we we're working inside a Federal Prison about 8 years ago and I had a helper who was about 7-8 years younger than me but he looked at LEAST 10 years older than I did. We were running conduit in a cell and my helper asked if he could bend it, to get some practice in. A couple inmates walked by and saw us and began yelling at me, saying " You oughta be ashamed of yourself! Young guy like you making that poor old fella do all your work!!!"

I didn't even laugh or smile, just kept a straight face and said " Man I know....it's awful how lazy we are. I'm just having him show me what to do since he's been doing this for decades". Helper didn't like the joke lmao
You guys were lucky they didn't ask you to go meet Bubba.

Just sayin.

I retired in July 2018, and I still wake up in time to go to work.
Chasfred. I sure miss seeing you here.

If any of you guys ever get to meet Chas, YOU will meet one super nice guy. Smitty and I enjoyed the company of him and his lovely bride in Annapolis while they were on a trip a few years ago.

Not retired here, too poor to ever retire. Once I get my back fixed, I hope to work till I die.
Too many houses to finish and cars to build.

I am 65 retired but
I'm doing whatever to go back to work. I don't like being retired, I wanna work to make new things.
There's a lot I wanna do. And so I will not remain retired.....doubtful.
Ampmad, this will be me. I am hoping to invest my inheritance to revise my business to one I can do at a home SHOP instead of having to chase jobs here there and everywhere and run for materials, waste $$$$ on high priced fuel thanks to UNCLE and all the other hassles they put in the way for the average Joe to make enough to sock away a buck or 2 for his dying days.

What helped us. I retired in 2020. She decided to pull the plug at the end of the school year 2022. Teacher. So two years while she still made full wages. She taught full time for 32 years and had credits for years she was a teachers aide and some part time work. She worked hard. She got a masters. And we’re living on her pension. My SS and very small pension from working about 18 years for a major corp….. as well as her small pension from her teachers aide/part time work is all going is savings. Her teachers retirement check goes to checking. So far. We barely have to touch savings. And before y’all go wow, must be nice. Mom and dad said something after they both retired. Told us they were really nervous about it. Less money coming in. She said, in reality…. We have more money now than we did when we worked every day. Basically…. She was realizing there’s a cost to go to work. In my case. Just a simple example. I went from 250 miles a week to a bit over 100 miles a months. Instead of filling the car every 10 days if I’m good to filling it every three months. So yeah. We get it Mom.

It is good to still feel inspired, in our age it might even be a privilege.

I am freshly retired since the beginning of this year, not quite voluntarily, and the new section of my life starts with some very fundamental changes. Just trying to comple a few projects (holidays!) and then going start thinking of some new profession. Part time, of course.

I'm actually considering going to the law firm full time and pulling out of the session job entirely. The commute is less than half the distance to the studio (round trip) but the studio pays twice as much as the law firm is offering, so that factors into my thought process.

As far as retirement goes, i could probably just quit cold-turkey right now, but it woukd be a significant income reduction and that would impact our investment potential, so, at the end of the day, I'm not sure retirement is "affordable" for me at this moment, although i would love to do it.

My brother retired a few years early from teaching cause of the mental stress.
Unfortunately he couldn't really afford to so is now considering cashing in some retirement investments.
Don't do it too early!

Right!

There's so many factors to consider and, at this point, everything i am considering would be a huge pay cut and I'm just not willing to do that, so i keep on working....

My wife retired about 6 years ago. It was the right decision for her for certain, but it will result in me working a few years longer than I had originally planed. I'm OK with that though.

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Obviously a pay cut. Full time pay to SS. But I’d been working mostly full time since 1972. A few hiccups. One store closed it doors. 09 got burned finally by the last big recession. I was just ready to be done. Nothing against where I was working. Good people. Friends. Job wasn’t overly stressful. I was just mentally in a place where the daily drama of going to work overpowered the quest for a paycheck.

And every time I think maybe I’ll go snag a part time gig to make some extra cash just for fun money….. the shiver starts at my hair follicles and continues to my toenails.

As always….. your results may vary.

Retirement for me is a long way off, and somewhat paradoxical.

I would like to retire from my current company and line of work. But, I know myself too well and I could only take it easy for about two months after retirement before I'd have to get up and do something else. I just can't sit still.

So, in some sense, I'll probably work until I die simply because I'm too hyperactive not to.

At the same time, to quote Lemmy Kilmister in Ace of Spades: "I don't want to live forever." I do have my faith, but continuing on ad infinitum on this planet is a rather dismal concept.

At some point, I want to breathe my last and be forgotten to this globe.

I would venture to say my hyperactivity level is quite likely far beyond yours.

I find that there are always things that i can do for enjoyment, so the idea of "retirement" for me doesn't mean inactivity, but rather choosing my daily activities.

I think getting up each day and choosing what i would like to engage in is far more appealing than a 2 hour commute to enjoy the privilege of doing things for others.
