High Voltages After Headfirst Origin 50 Mod

Whatever this thing is set to, I don't want to change anything...this amp is an absolute beast.

I've never ever played a better sounding amp...
Dang, Robert! Now you made me interested in trying to get an Origin... :D

Gentlemen Amp Gurus (Sysco, Ivan, 67plexi, etc...): how different would the process of doing this practical mod (the Ivanberg) be, when trying to apply it to a different marshall amp, like a 900, a 2000 or even an Origin 20? Would that even be feasible?

First run today at stage volume!!!!!

Absolutely perfect in every respect.

I got so many comments, but there were two themes. One was "Wow, that amp is cranked, but it don't hurt my ears," and "you can feel that cabinet moving air."

I'm just blown away.

Another interesting thing is how all guitars played through it sound good now, whereas before, there were things about certain guitars I didn't like.

The only real change from the settings @syscokid had dialed in at the lab is I reduced the gain from 3pm to noon and brought the master volume up to around 8 on the knob.

Volume production is off the charts. You can't use all the volume the amp is capable of producing.

So pleased!!!!

And make sure that the resistors are "metal oxide" and have a 2-watt rating!

Eazy Peezy... See the square pad in CN32?

Amp warmed up for at least 10 minutes. Set the meter to read DC. With one lead of the meter, probe it at that square pad of CN32. The meter's other lead should be grounded anywhere on the chassis, OR... grounded at the circle pad of CN32. Marshall recommends 70mV (35mV per EL34 tube), and this equates to a 60% or "medium" bias.

Yes, this is the trimmer pot for the bias circuit:

Hi syscokid, I'm trying to order the resistors for R8/9/10 (metal oxide 2w) as you stated above, but the resistors i'm finding look like the Blue type in the pic just(just above) not the larger bodied grey type marked in red the on the PCB, is there another name/description for the R8/9/10 resistors ?
Thanks, Graham.

Different brand of resistors can look very different from each other. If you specify "metal oxide" from a vendor, then that's what your going to get. You can also use 2-watt "metal film" resistors too (Not to be confused with "carbon film"). Metal oxide and metal film resistors are usually flameproof.

Can you get "heavy" metal resistors???

Ok,

It's not easy to compare recording equipment quality to the stuff that Jason is using in his videos. Additionally, the DI-Out on the Origins are not emulated, so
they don't sound very good running them direct out.

Jason's "Friedman 4x12 Cab Pack" software suite emulates (2) G12m-25 Greenbacks and (2) Vintage 30's.

I decided to take a stab at trying to capture a little of the Origin's tone with my old SM-57 (recently returned after 2 years out on loan pretty beaten up) close miked about 2" away from my 2x12 cabinet.
I was running really low volume here because I had family at home. You can hear the dogs barking in the background and people talking/doors closing, etc.

My 2x12 cabinet is loaded with a pair of Celestion 70/80's that are new take-outs from Marshall DSL40's that I seriously doubt have been broken in yet.

This was with 20 volt Jose Zener Diodes engaged. The floor noise is transformer hum, but this amp always had transformer hum even before the modifications.

This is recorded via a Scarlett 2i2 USB Interface direct onto Audacity.

What's interesting to me is that I cannot seem to capture what you hear with this amp in person. With my Marshall DSL40's, you could get a great tone on a recording, but they didn't sound great live. My Blackstar ID-Core 100 is the same way....it sounds thin and very one-dimensional live, but sounds great on a recording. With the Greg-Modded Origin, It's tough to get the same sound you hear in a live setting on a recording, but such as it is, here's a quick demo.

I have plans to get it into the pro studio soon to get a much better quality recording, but you can hear a little of what the rock is cooking here...

Robert, I'm assuming that by "live" sound you mean what you play comes straight out from the cab into the audience. If I may suggest, maybe you could mike the amp live with a lower volume and route the miked audio thru the FOH mixer (or any other) out to the PA / FOH speakers. Yes, that assumes also that you'd have monitors with an independent mix... Or maybe some reamping could work... I dunno... I may be waaay wrong and talking gibberish, most likely am. Just thinking out written...

Hi, Robert the wording is a bit ambiguous but i think that in the ORI50 manual it says:

"Connect your amplifier to an external recording device or sound desk using this output socket with added loudspeaker emulation."

I think it could mean it's emulated, or, it could mean it needs emulation.

Agreed, Sir...

It certainly doesn't sound emulated to my ears, but who knows!!!!
