Harley Davidson in trouble

Still on Norton sales.
I've been a keen motorcyclist since the mid 60's, I've owned a few Nortons, I live in an area that is affluent and motorcycle friendly all year around. I've NEVER seen a New Norton on the road. Harleys and Triumph are common place.

I see the sales for Australia, That Honda is #1

Honda sales in Australia aren't as straightforward as the figures suggest.
Australia Post run approx 8,000 NBC110 Super Cubs, they turn them over every 3 years or at 25,000km. This means each year they buy approx 2,600 Honda bikes, take them from the statics and Yamaha are the top seller ... BUT Yamaha out sell the other brands because of off road sales. I've seen numbers saying Triumph sell the most road bikes in Australia, can't put my hand to that story just now.

When it comes to numbers, you can total every bike of every make sold in the world, and still not get close to the Honda Super Cub. Probably the most important transportation in the world.

Yep but comparatively few were sold in Australia, we buy bikes for leisure not transport.

A lot of it has to do with the economy, Harley has been sourcing out parts manufacturing to China and Japan and with the sanctions the USA has imposed, Harley has had to raise prices and most die hard Harley owners want a bike made in the USA without imported parts. Trump even suggested Harley moving production to India and that isn't gonna fly. Mine is a late 60's Deluxe all USA made and I like it that way.

Actually I don't think Trump suggested they move to India. He commented on Harley themselves talking about moving production out of the USA.

My favorite bike since I saw them in High School (80's) has always been a Sportster. You can make any kind of style out of them. Certain model Buell's actually used the Sportster motor. They make awesome bobbers which is something I need to do eventually. I like Café style bikes also and I have owned a couple rockets also.

other bikes were a 2006 Honda Shadow 600VLX/1993 Kawa Ninja ZX6/2000 Kawa Ninja ZX6R/1999 Yama FZR6R which eventually turned into a 1987' Iroc Z for my son's 18th B-Day. A Sportster will always be parked in my garage though! I am thinking about a Dyna or Wide Glide for Dawn & I since she gave up on trying to learn her own.

I agree the Sportster is my favorite -- and IMHO the most versatile Harley--
had one of these---

still think they are a gorgeous looking machine

I'm not a motorcyclist, so my opinion is coming from a place where I truly don't care one way or another, but it sure seems to me that Harley-Davidsons are anachronistic. People aren't buying them because they're kind of ugly, pointlessly loud, and the image is tied to a variety of unpleasant things. The tech is low, the risk of appearing a poseur high, and so I can easily see why younger people have no interest.

well said---

I am a motorcyclist -- have been since i was 10--Im not a Biker (not that there is anything WRONG with that)

I rode EVERYTHING but a Harley for decades -- (3 ish to be exact before getting my Harley) -- ALWAYS wanted one -- because -- as a Native RED BLOODED Ohio youngster -- all the BAD A$$ guys at the bars etc HAD ONE --Evil Knievel--road a HARLEY --

After owning MANY brands--- and styles and models of motorcycle--- the trade off for the "cool" factor really declined in my 30's --- I dont care two shites how I "look" on the bike (I wear FULL padded armoured gear -- gloves full face helmet-- laugh if you will but I will survive the crash the unhelmeted wont----and my face is too pretty for rocks and bugs to damage it ;)

I want a bike that will get me there and back WHOLE and in one piece---EVERYTIME-- One that will allow me the torque AND speed and agility to out maneuver the soccer moms-- 16 year olds texting-- and blind retirees

There will be hate mail and arguments--- but Harley doesnt make a product that can do that--period--
the cornering is limited suspension travel a joke -- HP and acceleration (of stock what you buy on the floor DONT SHOW ME PICTURES OF NHRA HARLEYS BURNING NITRO_)---is LACKING at best--they are overweight and under pwered and under braked-- My 92 Sportster had parts designed from the 60's (before I was BORN) on it-- and HARLEY were PROUD of that "heritage" used it in MARKETING --- that isnt heritage that is cheap and lazy engineering ---

I love the look of a Harley(they are rolling art) and gorgeous to look at
the mega long stretched choppers are COOL -- like James Dean -- and Marlon Brando-- but I dont want to ride them either---

-- I even like the STOCK potato potato sound (not the open pipe ignorance)
AND FOR THE RECORD I dont like the WASP stinker IN A MEGAPHONE sound of the RICE ROCKETS EITHER -- STUPID --- your on a city street not Daytona Raceway! Just wear a sign that says IM A DOUCHE SQUID that cant RIDE! we would all be happier---

Also for a time the BUY AMERICAN mantra was well -- Harley ---- but now---Hondas are made in Ohio---Victories were being made in Iowa--Kawasaki in Lincoln Nebraska---(research how many parts on that new Harley AIN'T FROM AMERICA NO MORE---) its just not the same --your SUPPORTING American jobs buying most any of them now--in one way or another--

In my mind here is a simple easy PICTORIAL comparison

Very WeLL SAID, My BOY!!!!!!!

Really I dont hate Harleys --I do like them -- they are and were the driving force to get me to ride---and they are obviously (look at all the clones) the epitome of American motorcycling ---

From a marketing stand point (as we all know I love marketing) they are AMAZING -- the "Motor Company" logo is tattooed on more bodies than ANY OTHER LOGO in the world--period--that type of brand loyalty is unrivaled ---and commendable.

but -- I wont ride one ;)

my decades of research and thousands of miles on two wheels put this as my ride of choice---
gigi --clean.jpg
475 lbs---132 hp--on road off road 1 or 2 up short or long distance 2005 UGLY green fuel injected triple cylinder Triumph Tiger
no chrome to polish (hell I only wash it every 3 years if it needs it or not) brake pads-- batteries and tires are all I've replaced in 12 years
but they arent for everyone--
1. min. 34 inch inseam or forget about it its a TALL bike
2. strong desire to NOT look like anyone else--
3. see number 1 because at zero mph 475 lbs loaded with fuel is a top heavy P.I.A. :)
4. Tigers like to nap -- on their sides ---often (Ive dropped this thing in the yard (3 times) off a trailer once-- in the driveway -- and on a dirt cow trail with deep (DEEEP) sand...
5. they are DURABLE and can be dropped----often --- (without harming costly CHROME bits--)
6......now where did I put that number 6..............

---- its not just this bike--- Ive owned dirt-- street- track -- cruiser-- "standard" and basically every STYLE of bike the "dual sport" truly is the best all around motorcycle for doing-- anything

but Im a bass player -- what do I KNOW....
