Guitar Gas / Build / Buy

I enjoy playing them. Never had one that was great. Not sure a good one is worth the money.

I had thought about putting on locking tuners and a better bridge on my now revived squire. In the end though I can find a less expensive alternative that will play just as good if not better.
A sum of adequate parts.

I still want the build. I could end up with more strats than other styles.

If you want to try a build, how about a cheap kit?
My first build was a $95 Muslady tele kit like this:

Built it mostly per plans the first time...
I've taken it apart and changed it more than once.
Current version is a P-90 deluxe-ish kinda thing.

Learned a lot, and never had to worry too much about binning it if I totally f'ed it up in the process.
It's actually not too shabby of a player.

Looks like it turned out well.

You must of had to route the control cavity for the Gibson style pot configuration?

I've done some stupid sheet to guitars over the years and painted enough of them to almost be able to do it  . any who if your goal is to learn and enjoy the process, then expectation met. But I "F'd" up enough to know it aint easy to get it right on the third try much less the first. But I enjoy it and my projects are not for anyone else but me, so I do not care what the resale is. So go for it.

Cool, you made it your own.
I have pickgaurd phobia. My guitar will be rear routed or it could routed for a recessed wood cover.
Pickguards are fairly easy with a router table.
I make a 1/4" play template for the outside shape and pup locations.
Screw the blank on through the PG screw locations.
Just follow the template with a bevel bit outside and straight bit in the pup holes.

Fundamentally, I don't like the wood they use.
Maple, poplar, etc are the deadest sounding woods for guitars when compared to mahogany....
Strats lack sustain and the pickup positions bury the harmonics.
I just feel frustration from the lack of responsiveness.

If I was building a Fender, I would start by using different wood entirely....which is the most important factor to me.

What so many people fail to realize is how the wood affects the sound and sustain. If a guitar lacks sustain I'm not interested.
There's no question in my mind that the wood is the most important factor.
