Gibson's New Look

Which is interesting because it was not originally intended to be so. Les Paul more envisioned it to be a jazz guitar.

My take is that at the time that Ted McCarty was designing the Les Paul Rock and Roll was still an amorphous art form that was just coming together and was as-yet unnamed, but I think McCarty was well aware of the blues, r&b and country elements that eventually melded into RnR and designed the guitar with those styles in mind as much as Jazz. What little input Les Paul the man had on the actual design of Les Paul the guitar was probably no more than the stupid trapeze tailpiece and what color they got painted but I think you are right that he viewed it as a jazz instrument.

Look at the Jazz Master! When Elvis Costello started to play one, the Jazz people tossed in the towel.

I kind of like this one...

that hitler thing is so ugly, it makes the hair on the back of my neck raise up.
take it down.... NOW.

Somebody please take it down.

I think painting Les Pauls like trucks is perfect.
They weigh too much and have terrible ergonomics.

I think the ergonomics are real good on a Les Paul once you get used to it Tony Manhattan. The upper fret access may not be the greatest compared to an SG guitar but I find a Les Paul guitar is very well-balanced in shape and design. The arched top provides some sort of comfort and overall I think it's one of the best designed guitars out there.

I learned how to play on a Les Paul. It's the only guitar I am 100% comfortable on. Its all the other style guitars that I have to get used to. For example, I think Telecasters are far and away the least ergonomic solidbody, and I am always uncomfortable when I play mine, but nothing else quite sounds like them so I put up with it.

I own a 1952 AVRI Fender Telecaster which I think is great to play on. Even though it doesn't have the ergonomics of a Stratocaster I find it quite comfortable to play on IMHO. The Tele has been around for so long that it has developed a cult following as you probably know already. I have a Jackson King V guitar that I bought a while back and found it awkward to play on at first but I found a position that makes it comfortable to play on and has become one of my favourite guitars...great upper fret access for sure & killer sound.
