Gibson Les Paul and why

The Look! The Feel, The Mythos, The History, The Nostalgia....It's just all there and the fact I always wanted one since my uncle played one in a band in the early 70's...

Now I have 5 I think...

Most of you know me as a Fender aficionado, but as a matter of fact the guitar model that fits me best is the Les Paul.

I began playing with a cheapo Memphis LP copy, followed by an Epi SG, which I never really learned to appreciate. Couldn't stand the neckdive and the baseball bat neck.

Well, then I bought this beauty, a 2010 Epiphone Les Paul Standard...

It was a great guitar, I miss it a lot, but had to sell it to get the extra money when I saw Jessica (my Am Std Stat) at the store.

The US Fender is obviously much superior but I miss that God damned bitch. I loved to play it through an Orange amp.

Epiohone Les Paul Standards are probably the most underrated guitars around. They ROCK.

Damn! That is pretty, I bet you hated to let her go!

I did.

It was nowhere near a Gibson LP Standard but it held its ground pretty well in jams and gigs. I never modded it, except for adjusting pole pieces, which was pretty hard considering that th ose were held in place by wax.

But we had tons of fun together, the two of us.

Btw it was quite funny back then.

I had a friend who was into band lifestyle, and he used to mock me for playing Epiphones.

Never made ONE single compliment about the guitar.

Well, guess WHO bought it as soon as I spread the word about letting it go because I had just bought myself a Fender

:D

I am, fundamentally, a Les Paul guy. It's the model I learned to play on, used exclusively for the first decade of my playing life, and have always ended up going full-circle back to no matter what has caught my fancy or been the flavor of the month. I play my best on one, sound my best on one and feel my best with one. Doesn't mean that I don't have other guitars that I play regularly, just that if I could have only one guitar it would be a Les Paul.

While I really like the looks of Les Paul's I've not played very many that I could live with. I can't really say why. They just don't feel right to me. I do have an older Les Paul Special that does feel right. Maybe is something to do with the carved top. The special is basically a studio without the carved top. In any case I prefer SGs and PRS over Les Pauls. Even Teles I like over Les Pauls. Strats are another story. I'd take almost any Les Paul over a Strat. Then there are Juniors. Don't know why but I really like Juniors. Maybe it is the carved top?

NOT to HIJACK my own thread--- but DAMN IT --- look at these PRICES---

Look at the price on the Strat copy -------------- you can still get a Strat copy --- over at the Rondo site With an AMP---for less than 1982!!!!?????
http://www.rondomusic.com/product6756.html

Yeah, you can get a new Squier for a good bit less than the $425.72 that 1982 price translates to these days: http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=169.95&year1=1982&year2=2016

We live in an age of miracles.

None for me, way too heavy and too thick with a sharp contour. A guitar doesn't have to be heavy to sound good. I got this one that is in the SG weight range.

But I just recently realised the Epi Ultra is chambered and has a belly cut. I understand this is blasphemy, but I just might ...

I understand why people like chambered and swiss-cheesed Les Pauls. I don't like them myself and I don't mind the weight of non-relieved models. I know there are plenty of arguments in each direction on this, but I have almost 40 years of playing LP's under my belt (and I've owned enough of them in that time!) and I know what I hear and feel and in my own personal experience, the non-relieved ones just sound better.

The guitar I play the best and have the most fun with is actually a LP copy. It's my Line 6 JTV-59...not only does it just feel right which makes it easy to play, but the built in modelling makes for some easy sound changes on the fly. And incredibly the actual humbuckers in the guitar are very nice as well....

I don't dispute any of that. I couldn't even begin to build an argument for or against it, since I never own either. Like you said, just personal preferences. But "better" is a very subjective concept.
