Delusional Old Farts... yeah man, I played with those dudes...
...and one more toad to toss in the cauldron:
If you play well, you can play any damn guitar and you'll sound like yourself. ...which, if you play well, is a good thing.
So if you're old and you play an Explorer, or a B.C. Rich War Beast... the casual observer's first impression might be derisive,
but then they stop and say, 'yeah, but the guy can play, can't he..." And that, my friend, is what you want.
It's our job as performers to give the audience something to care about. Assume that they don't give two hoots...
and go after them to change that. If you succeed, your music succeeds. The instruments we choose are to assist us
toward that end. To give the audience something to remember. So if the Explorer gives the audience a jolt, and you've got
the chops to back that up, then you're on your way.
That's what I meant when I said that if the guitar makes you want to live up to its image, you can utilize that.
Harness that and put it to work. For me, the SG has this effect. And it's given me something fine in my sixties. I bought my
first SG as a gift to myself for making 60. I felt the clammy hand of my own mortality, and hoped that an SG might be a
bright flame to drive dark shadows away. And it was, and it still is. May you have this joy.
So tell me... (you should know). Do they make an Explorer as a Gold Top?
