GIBBO PUPS?

Just speaking generally, ranking p’ups is tough because so much depends on personal taste and the rest of the rig in use.

I sometimes feel like I must be a little out of the loop because I don’t have a universal disdain for Gibson pickups. Sometimes, it seems like it’s almost expected to remove the Gibson pickups. The three Gibsons I have that were complete guitars when I got them still have the original pickups. (My fourth, the LP Studio, was a husk, so things are different with that one.)

I think nearly any of them can sound good depending on the rest of the rig and what you’re trying to achieve.

I've had some disappointments with Gibson pickups. The 498T/490R in my 2016 Gibson Goldtop had a short of some kind, which would cause the pickup to go nuts if you touched it. I actually sent a video of this to Gibson.

My new 57 Classics were just noisy all the time. Swapped a cheap set of GFS Classic II's into the same guitar and noise stopped.

Having said this, I have a brand new 2016 Gibson Les Paul Studio T Series here and the 498T/490R pickups sound GREAT!

So, I'm giving Gibson pickups another try. In fact, everything going into my soon-to-arrive 2016 Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute is Gibson.

I even have a Gibson aluminum Nashville bridge and aluminum tailpiece for it...

I really like the 490R/490T combo in my Gibson SG. They have that modern sound with more mids in them compared to '57 Classics and both are Alnico II magnets for a real sweet vintage tone. They are one of my favourite pick up combos.
