How about a thread for cool/fun stories about our Guitar/music worlds?

One I think of often was when I moved into a basement apartment and I just started getting serious about playing guitar and acquiring gear. The local shop set me up with a Peavey 412 cab, Mosvalve 100watt amp, and a Peavey Rock Master Preamp. I had two new Washburn guitars that I was learning on, but had never pushed the amp at all. I had it all set up in the 2nd bedroom of the place we were renting.

I come home one day early and the owner of the house, who lived upstairs in the house was gone, no car in the driveway. My later-to-be-wife was also gone for a while still at work. So, time to see what this rig can do. :D

I knew this was going to be loud, and I've been in the car audio world and know the dangers of loud. I grabbed a 30' guitar cable, cranked up the amp to 10, preamp jacked up to 10 pre and post. Walk out of the room and close the door, careful the cable runs under the door. Turn up the guitar volume and slam an A power chord.

Oh glorious tone from heavens and it was a chain saw!!! I jammed for about 30 minutes just like that before I started to get nervous someone would be home soon. Turn everything down and off, go about the rest of my day. About an hour or so later, I get a knock at the door. Open it up and it's the landlord.

Landlord: "What the hell happened?"
me: "....huh?"
"How long have you been home?"
"a few hours. why?"
"You didn't hear anything going on upstairs?"
"No. what's up?"
"What have you been doing all this time you've been home?"
"playing video games and just relaxing. What's up?"
"My room is destroyed! It's a wreck!!"

He goes on to explain that he has a ton of Baseball memorabilia in the room directly above the 2nd bedroom with my Weapons of Mass Destruction rig. :D Apparently, all my chugs and power chords knocked off most of the wall hangings, which fell and crashed into a whole lot of shelves which collapsed. Complete destruction.

"nope no idea what happened....."

My fav gig ever was a sat nite Church(Mega Church) we got invited to main spot of the District conference. Didn't really think much of it..just another gig..we gigged a lot, anywhere & everywhere those years..opener was a solo piano performance. Then a 35 member Southern Gospel choir..full bass & keys..it was awesome the singing, the Musicianship was incredible. We got to hang with them before we came on in the back, (We set up at 2pm & no one was there but the sound crew, so we didnt know the audience)..about 45 minutes later after the preacher talked ..

at 10 pm..lights off, then goes the video intro, strobe lights & the fog juice is blasting, Jim comes frm the back, tapping the intro on the V as the drums beat hard. the lights come on & we are staring at 1,500+ people , maybe 10 whites. We looked at eachother & singer walked over & said what do we do? I whispered in his ear..bring it !! Bring the heavy songs in the set up now..he went over to drummer as he was just on the kick & called a few songs out..Jim instinctively kept the inro going..then wham, we launched into our heaviest song. About the 2 min mark in, they all were on the pews...headbanging & dancing like nothing i ever saw..& we were playing the heavies...they were yelling..come on !! and were up in our faces..i mean up on that stage..it wasnt a mosh ..it was a rowdy fist pumping situation..it never ended,,the interaction from the singer to the audience was full call outs & call backs..hand clpapping ..foot stomping all n the pews & seats the whole time..no one sat down at all !!

We bonded so well..had their bass guy plug in his rig & ran bass with me for last 4 songs. then in the middle of one did a 2 bass funk jam ..everyone all came up & danced...then the guitars got added in...in a metal way..it was just crazy..the music..it followed the lead of the people...at that point, there was no stage..the whole building was the stage..we are all wireless..we all just roamed..i was back at the soundboard at one time..just stunned at the stage & all the people up there

we asked the choir to come back up with us for one of our songs,,words were on the screen.. was so touched..i mean the harmony.

Then Everybody at the end..singing Amazing Grace holding hands as we let the song drift us off the set....there we were 4 long haired leftovers from anther era..on stage being hugged & treated like somebody's..to this day..my musical highlight..

They kept us up there for hour & 45 minutes...a full blown metal show...

I have one kinda like GM. In my previous home we had a big family room and kitchen, which was 16 ft wide about 45 ft long with a 10ft ceiling. One day when the wife was out I decided to put the Marshall valvestate 8280 100 watt amp at one end of the room and cranked it to 10. Had never done that before so, what the heck. Wailed away with the LP for about 15 minutes (with a long cord) and was, whew, that was cool. Put everything away before the wife got back. As I was walking around the house after that I noticed that just about EVERY picture on both floors were no longer straight. Damn, I had to get the level and straighten about 40 pictures before the wife got back. I just laughed as I was straightening them.

In late 2005, Ozzy announced that he was considering a split with Zakk Wylde. This was announced both during an on-air interview and via a press release from his management.

I found a Rolling Stone article that mentions these circumstances:

I created and submitted an audition CD to the mailing address provided in the release. A few weeks later, I received an email from Sharon:

Dear Robert,

Thank you for submitting your demo CD. Ozzy appreciates your unique and melodic style. Thus far, you are the only person who sent original material. Since Ozzy is looking for not only a guitarist, but a co-writer for this musical project, your submission was a strong representation of those abilities.

It is among the top 5 submissions currently under consideration.

At this time, Ozzy has yet to decide whether or not to proceed with this project. However, when that decision is made, you will be notified of the time, date and location of a live audition.

Please send us updated contact information upon recepit of this letter.

Ultimately, I didn't get the gig...LOL

Until COVID I played in a weekly bar jam. The house players were pretty good. Most nights were pretty decent for a bar jam. One night there was just the house players and me so I got to play all night. The house guys were pretty tight and we got into a groove where we were all locked in. The house rhythm guitar player started playing Shaky Town and we all locked in and jammed on it for about ten minutes. By the end of the song there wasn't anyone in the place sitting down. The whole bar was dancing. We went on to play Funky Town, Superstition, and a few more funk songs before we ran out of energy. Only about 40 or 50 people in the audience, but all of them were dancing and the band was locked in and tight. It's always fun when the audience is into it but that night was something special.

Talk about professional validation?

Must be a great memory for you, something to replay when you're facing those tough times.

I don't have much of a story behind it but yours kind of reminds me of one time we were booked into a gig for a youth Christian group "jamboree" type thing, but we didn't know it was for a youth Christian group, and needless to say we were most definitely NOT youth Christian group friendly music. We soldiered through it but I think they hated every minute of if - the crowd was down to like half by the end of our set.

Here's one that I have reworded enough that I can post it. This was posted herein previously in June of 2017.

Funny fellow am I...

On three separate occasions, I was approached about joining three country western acts as a guitar player. Each discussion was pursuant to signed non-disclosure agreements, but suffice to say, everyone has heard of them. In each instance, I politely declined the jobs without hesitation. Once, I was asked point blank how I could, so quickly, turn down a 150 date a year touring job with a major label artist. I politely asked the woman if she really wanted the truth, or a feel good answer. She replied, "I want to know the real reason. People dream about a once in a lifetime opportunity like this..."

"Ok...," I said....as I looked out the window of the Capitol Records building in downtown Los Angeles....I leaned forward in my chair and took a sip of water before I answered....

"I live very comfortably. I don't need or want the money....I play for the sheer enjoyment of it (I do enjoy earning the $$$ of course!!!)...and, having said that, I cannot play music in a genre where I hate every single note I am asked to play, and have to stand up in front of, potentionally thousands of people, and pretend that I am having a good time..."

She leaned back in her chair and said, "You may be the first honest person in this business I have ever met...."

While there are a select few C&W acts I would consider working for, they never asked me.... :)

Here's an interesting factoid...each one of these country acts also carried a "contractual obligation to play only Fender guitars and amplifiers" and that was aghfspelled out in the employment contract.

I would, however, sign on with Ghost without hesitation...

Well it's a good thing for us that you did not get the gig! If you had, you would probably never found us here at TTR as you would be too busy for all us unknowns.

I was playing this SVT in the basement, and the police came by to give me a ticket. (naturally it was loud as :poo:)
This house was in Herndon Virginia.
I went to court and proved that the police didn't measure the loudness with a dB meter.
I won a dismissal based on the fact that "loud" has no meaning without a measurement.... :pound-hand:
But it was louder than mere mortals would have expected.
Guilty as charged.

Playing out one night at this place with a high stage - both to the inside florr and the outside ground - had a door pretty much center that lead outside (loading area type thing), quite the drop to the ground. Well, the drummers back was right up against that door - that is, until the door open and he went backwards out it - in the middle of a song - lol. Didn't get hurt fortunately - not sure how he managed to do it, but he did...
