DSL40C Tips:

Note that I designed the bridge pickup placement to be closer to the middle pickup position on a Black Beauty:

I believed this would make lead tones fuller and richer, at the expense of darkening the rhytym tone a little....

Now for a shot of the amp settings used in the video:

Perfect settings. I'm always in the ball park of what you have there. I guess the only difference, I lower the mids a bit sometimes. I get good Megadeath tone rite there. Amp is great for AC/DC type too. Actually, the amp is great for a wide variety of music. 80's metal is perfect. But, clean channel with the Les Paul neck (SH-2n Jazz) is awesome. Blues to Jazz!! ...there's a volume issue between Clean and Gain CH, but not an issue for me. Great amp......GREAT AMP!

Ok....

I used my Weber Mass Lite 100 quite a bit when I first got it, then put it back in the box for a while. This morning, I pulled it out and hooked it back up. Wow - I didn't realize how it shapes the sound - as opposed to just reducing volume. I'm running volume on my "Red' channel at 9 O'clock (2.5 on the dial) and that's blazingly loud - with the attenuator knob around 7 O'clock, so there is a lot of attenuation going on here.

Ok, here are my personal DSL40C Tips/Thoughts?Experiences

The effects loop is noisy - I don't like that - not a lot of noise, but you hear it when it is switched on, even if nothing is in the loop.

If running on "Lead 2" keep gain no more than 9 to 11 O'clock - It gets very "boomy" and "over-gainy" above this settings (FYI - Lead 2 imparts more white noise into the signal)

If running on "Lead 1" gain works nicely at around 2-3 O'clock - still a lot of clarity and articulation here without too much gain

The EQ's all seem much more sensitive when running the attenuator, but it works good both ways.

Here's my current best settings. I run these with our without the attenuator:

DSL40C Best Settings March 2018.jpg

Settings as shown above - Photo taken this morning:

Full Power 40 Watt Setting (20/40 watt switch on back of amp)

RED Channel (Ultra Gain) Volume at 2.5 "Lead 1" Switch Position

Treble at 12 O'clock

Middle at 7

Bass at 9

Presence at 8.5

Resonance at 8.5

Reverb at 1/2

The most amazing thing is how clean the doubleneck sounds, despite a lot of gain being used.

I'm thinking I might downsize for the 12 string side. Instead of running a huge 1997 Valvestate VS265 2X12, maybe a Boss Katana would be a good choice for the 12 string side????

Cool, I'll give it a go. i don't have a compression pedal or attenuator, so I may not get the same results. I usually dial it in by ear, so I'll use this as a reference point to start. Keep you posted

This has been a real journey for me. I'm discovering my tone is getting more dynamic as I roll off the gain. While I do love the heavy gain rhythm tone, its not a universal sound - in that it works great for Megadeth - but not everything.

I think this is my best, most articulate tone yet. I will post a video to this thread over the weekend.

Robert, I don't know if your gain knob is more than half way up or what gain stage you have been using, but I've learned that my Orange Dark Terror sounds really nice and articulate without using the control even halfway up. Of course, I'm talking about home and moderately loud TV volumes.

My experience is that the amp versatility decreases in proportion to the amount of gain and distortion generated by the amp. I don't rely on pedals other than a reverb pedal to add some depth to my tone.
