The JJ '832 costs just half of that. And both the '82 and the '83 from JJ are good. that's more or less the old Telefunken technology.
Thanks, Bea...your expertise is appreciated!!!!

I think you're catching on now...
Ha ha.... I'm the opposite! If it doesn't cost enough, then there must be something wrong with it! And everything excites me... except for Rap! OH WOW... I see a butterfly...I'm kind of frugal...not much excites me!!!!

Which makes you Frugal...![]()
Might be part of the problem especially with the palm muting stuff. Usually, when something doesn't work right after we've dicked around with it, it's most likely due to something we did. This idea is presented very well in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". The author actually drives himself to insanity striving for perfection but it's an excellent read on society's lack of values when it comes to quality.I am wondering if the Reaper 55Hz may just not be the right speaker for what I am trying to do??? I used this thing quite a bit with the stock 70/80 and I never remember it sounding like this.....

Honestly, I think unless you are doing some seriously downtuned chugga, chugga brootalz stuff the 55hz resonant frequency is going to be a hindrance. It's going to emphasize the low mids and soften the upper mids where most of a guitar's fundamental freqs lie. I'd think you want an 85hz resonant frequency in a Marshall (which is what the stock 70/80 is). It'll give you back the punch and detail.
In the other thread I recommended the Mesa C-90 and I'll do that again here. It's the best speaker I've yet encountered for high gain in a open back cab. Has the punch of most speakers in closed back applications, but the sound profile is based on the old Celestion Lead 80, and they are UK made.
Your post is very wise. I am thinking you could be right. I think I have the old 70/80 in a box somewhere...at least for testing.
I'd yank that thing out of the box and drop it back in. I'm betting you will be pleasantly surprised, although those tend to be a little fizzy sounding. If you get yourself a more rounded speaker like a C-90 or a Creamback you'll have the tone, IMO.
Robert, If I was you I would get one of these:
Head Cab for DSL40C – Mission Engineering
And a good 1x12 or 2x12 cab with a well-chosen speaker or two. It'd be a lot more versatile to use with different cabs and you won't be rattling your tubes brains out.
Wow. I never knew about these. I still have my pair of Jackson/Eminence 4X12's from the Wasteland Weekend event...
You could just get a MEsa
sorry
Hey Robert, have you ever been to the L.A. Amp Show?Maybe. I am not opposed to that, although I haven't had a Mesa really blow me away yet, it could happen.
Hey Robert, have you ever been to the L.A. Amp Show?
The trade show usually happens in September or October at the Airtel Plaza Hotel at the Van Nuys Airport.
I've always wanted to attend one of these trade shows, but I haven't yet. The vendors rent out individual rooms, and you get to really crank away to your heart's desire on any demo amp. You can bring your own guitar if you want. A $20 entry fee keeps the majority of the riff-raff away. Festivities and prizes galore. No date for this year's L.A. show is set yet.
