Do Power Tubes Have a Particular Sound???

Nothing to see here folks … just move along .... it's just another Guitar & Amp Geek. Sad tale of woe there, The electric shock therapy didn't work on him it only encouraged him, we had to stop that shock therapy, since he liked it!

Well Plex, funny you should mention my " Cookie Jar" and tubes! I actually have a Fender "Cookie Master" cookie jar! And right here is a photo of what I actually do put in the "jar " , I mean ceramic cabinet. So for years I've never looked into it and sure enough the same pairs of Mullard EL37's and GEC KT66's were still in it! I kinda laughed for a while thinking to myself hummmph, I must of forgot I had some in there too. Thanks for reminding me about that.

Just goes to show ya how way over the top and gone I actually am with this stuff, that's why I like to hang with you guys here!

I know of a particular wise-ass in the Boston area who is gathering bits for a KT66 JTM45 build. If you would ever like to part with a pair, he would give them a very nice home. The bag of Piher carbon film resistors just arrived today, so just need to keep gathering stuff until I'm ready to start soldering.

John I the past I've been selling them for 5 years till all the vulture dealers finally figured out where I got them from. At which time I called for my usual 50 pairs and found out from the source every VG dealer called him and wiped out the 5000 that were left in 2 days. He also thanked me not realizing I was upset they figured it out as that would be the end of my little 5 year business, " Hank's Electrical Supply " He bid a small fortune on a lot from a closed Aussy air base. Probably near Wugga Wugga, Australia! Every time I ordered the bank would call me and I tell em yea, Wugga Wugga realy existed. I got em $75 a pair, sold em to dealers, not feeding them too many, to keep em hungry, for $150 , which they were happy to pay as they turned em over for $250. After that ended I kept a few pairs for myself. Every single one I got from him were perfectly matched and I mean for all 5 years as they were for military, Since then I'd let them go to guys on forums once in a while till I ran out except For my JTM 45/100 and JTM 45, both 66's. The last 4 I traded for 4 GEC KT88's for the Plexi Park 150 as I noticed a new quad of them (GEC) went for 1K on Ebay!!!! Those ones you've seen are for those 2 amps as you can see that the ones in those amps are original and I can't believe still sound good but they gotta be on the way out, if you were to see em you'd say THATS well used tubes. I might be able to find some in the garage, I don't know fer sure but I do know 1 of the 3 I had to put 25v DC to get it to light up so that one is no good and I think the two others weren't matched, not even close, at all Transconductance wise. So I can't possibly offer much of anything ...

Spelt Wagga Wagga, but pronounced Wogga Wogga. It's in South eastern(ish) New South Wales. Most Aussies from other states have probably never heard of it either, I've heard some weird pronunciations of it.
GEC KT66's were a staple of military's here (all branches of). They still turn up "new in box" at antique electronic gatherings, swap meets etc here, though less & less the last several years & the prices have gotten way up there. I have a buddy that scored some duets when they could still be found at good prices. Ive tried numerous times but can't get him to part with any, even though he isn't using them. Cheers

Yea, The cookie master has a matching number on both the top & Bottom! Figures it'd end up " vintage " too. I have a whole large box of similar stuff like that. Marshall stack belt buckles, Fender Bottle Cap opener with the cool bottom piece that the cap falls into. Microphone & guitar lighters just a ton of nick knacks, I think there called curio's. My favorite is my " Handwired " bottle of Marshall scotch. The whole collection is 20 bottles , one for each year but I only have one year but some of my friends have all 20 years bottles,

depends on what speaker you run it through--

it is GREAT at low -- home-- useable volumes---

its not gonna CUT THROUGH A MIX
or RIP HEADS
or beat down a drummer ---- well it is small enough to SWING and beat the drummer to death with..............so........I guess it WILL ACTUALLY BEAT A DRUMMER.................

WHICH 15 watt amp?!?!?!
MARSHALL LEAD 15 of course!
Nice cleans. The author states that the speaker is a Weber Blue Dog (ceramic? alnico?), so that should help. Overdrive is a bit fizzy, but I bet the tone balances out more as the master volume goes up. The reverb does a nice supporting job and doesn't overwhelm the signal.

I took the Oxfords out of a blackface Fender Bandmaster cabinet and put in @ WEBER vst Blues to compare with the real old blues. One was an Alinco the other Ceramic 12". It's unbelievable how it sounds! Even better after a 100 hours on them .... that turned out to be a good decision. But I must admit I've made a few real bad ones too! I had to decide which way to wire it , 4 or 16 ohms and I did 16 but 4 would of made me able to put the old BF twin on it which was the original idea of the cabinet in the first place.

The deal for the BF Twin and the closed back Bassman cabinet for $0 is another whole big story of how I pulled it off and everybody was happy, especially me

Hey thanks, I follow weber vst but never had known about an impedance matcher. That issue I had with the Z of the cabinet was the first time I ever had to worry about that. And it gives you a line out for a PA or recording feed. Sharp lookin too

The Weber blue dog is available as alnico or ceramic.
I have an alnico Weber in my 5f1 Champ clone, really nice clean or overdriven. Thickens up when overdriven. Alnico speakers compress in a way that ceramics cant. Cheers

I have a Weber in my little ‘73 Silverface Champ. Mine is the Signature Classic with a 1.25“ voice coil. I don’t think Weber makes it, anymore.

It sounds way better than the original Oxford.
