Ask Drumoid--- more than one "project" has been handed over for "repair" ---I.E. please fix this jumbled pile of crap I "f"'ed up horribly before I put it in a wood chipper---

Some can not sing------ some can not perform brain surgery --- some can not play a piano---- some (I) can NOT SOLDER-- I commend you all for your lead melting schmelting and connecting abilities----

A very good question RVA. In this case the pot is wired as a "variable resistor", where its resistance value can vary from 0 ohms when turned right up, to the full value of the pot, 50k ohms when turned right down.
When a pot is wired with all 3 lugs in use it is (most often) being used as (variable) voltage divider.
Think of an electric guitar's volume & tone control. The volume control is wired with all 3 of the pot's lugs being used while the tone control is wired with only 2 lugs being used. The volume control pot is acting as a variable voltage divider, the tone control pot is acting as a variable resistance. Better get back to work. Cheers
 
They are not main stream yet, but there are companies that make 3D printers that print circuit boards. There are services just starting out that will print you a one of card. Not sure of pricing though.

Nice work Ray! I admire your ability to work on such small intricate parts. Soldering electronics on guitars sometimes is challenging for me because my hands are shaky... a side effect from medication.

Ivan, perhaps I could come "couch surf" at your place for a month and learn this "soldering" technique first hand?
I will only drink all your Rum and BEER -- I dont pee on the floor -- and can be a right pain in the arse (ask Gasket) --- now when is a good time for you to pick me up at the airport then?

1 more step before plug in - the chip. Not sure which way it goes because I was expecting an cutout/indent on the chip to match to the socket cutout. Do I match the dark circle on top to the socket indent side?

Judging by the instruction PDF, and your posted pics, yes. The indent is indicative of the orientation of the chips indent.

But the chip does not have an indent, just that dark circle. Is that the side that should go on the socket indent side?

Yes

Edit: The little circle on the chip looks like it is indented to me(lower than the rest of the surface)
