Call Me Crazy: Cheap Winder Build

So, I say try the JB. You will probably like it. I generally like low to mid output humbuckers and rely on pedals and the amp for gain. Everyone likes something a little different.

+1 on the JB. Good pickup. Around 16k IIRC...I've installed lots of them.

Personally, I can't get a sound I like under 14k, and I'm still pounding the amp with a TS-9.

In fact, I think the hotter pickups actually sound brighter and more lively when played clean than the low output humbuckers.

My custom DiMarzio Neanderthal is 16.5k, 44AWG, Scatter Wound, AlNico9 10,500 Gs with nickel-silver baseplate.

It's on par with an EMG81TW for output, but with clarity and string-to-string definition reminiscent of an old PAF.

I want to push my amp with nothing other than the guitar itself, if possible.....

I don't remember what's in my Gib Explorer but it's 2016T stock pups....and they sound great. 500T I think....

How does that stack up against a JB?

It's doing great in the JJ Jr.

Pretty hot..Gibson.com claims the 500T is 11.4k Ceramic.

The Duncan JB-SH4 is 16.5k Alnico V.

I had a JB in my Schecter. It was cool. It’s used in my band’s recording of Prisoner...it’s the guitar playing mostly octaves over the other guitar that’s mostly chording. (amps used: Orange Tiny Terror, and Mesa Dual Rec...so kinda buzzy) I got rid of it in a quest for more “beef”.
Edit: It does sit where it needs to sit in the mix, giving the bass line the stage it deserves here(IMO).

I have since found these(with alnico V magnets):
Super heavy. Super beefy. They’re in the bridge position on both of the crescent moon Gibsons in my sig pic.

Here's my next neck pickup. This should be interesting. I've got 4200 winds on the screw side and 4800 on the slug bobbin. Total resistance is 7.19k ohms. I used 42awg poly coated wire. Slugs are 1018 and screws are 1022 and I used an A5 magnet. Trying to see how bright I can get the neck to sound.

The bridge will be wound close to 8k ohms and will use an A2 magnet with all 1010 steel.

That looks like something that I might use! ;) The colors are perfect!
